Dear all, As well as gazeteer information, I have received some Heraldic details -- I'll process & post this seperately (as you may have seen on Dq-announce). Please send *any* info as GMs or players (in/out of character): both current & historical. Info is sought on persons, places, and orders. Whilst formal shield descriptions are desirable, e.g.: Arms of the [New] Western Kingdom: Or, a two-headed eagle displayed sable. vague descriptions are fine, if you are uncertain of exact terms (or they don't exist in mundane armorial books) just send what you have. Information about symbols & sigils is also sought; even generalised comments such as "The Impaling Inquisitors of St Ygor the Merciful wear black, all-concealing robes and are usually armed with flails." _Please_ would ALL players of Armigerous &/or noble characters indicate the arms that they use either when adventuring, or which are associated with their home estates. Contact me if you have any questions or perhaps Martin who has extra practice & expertise may be able to assist you. The aim is not to require players to learn or employ heraldry, but if your character is any sort of noble from the baronies they *will* have some sort of heraldic shield or device -- even if they adventure with a blank or covered shield. If you *do* have a separate adventuring persona from your "civilian" identity please do indicate which is which. PS: some people sent me previous mailings, I'll get back to you concerning outstanding questions in the next few days. regards, Michael. Dear all, further to this month's minutes and discussions on the dq list, there is a rough version of the Gazeetter at http://www.geocities.com/Vienna/2567/gazwork1.html This rough version is *purely* so that people can see what information I have so far. I have processed all your specific mailings as of 16:00 29/11/98. When the details are approximately correct a cleaner version (possibly in several pages) will be launched at a slightly different address. Please mail me all your corrections & additions; I'll update the page regularly. Preferred entries should be brief, relevant, and indicate places and persons of relevance to guild members. Please indicate the main language(s) of territories. For each place, please say who has GMed there so that other GMs & players may contact previous GMs, if they want to. Descriptions of places & inhabitants should be as generally perceived by most partymembers. The gazetteer is intended for general guild-member usage -- so it will *not* have information confidential to GMs or a small group of guildmembers all conspiring to keep a secret. Heraldic information: this will appear separately. If you have Arms, or even symbols, for a state, place, order or persons (NPC or PC) please also send this information -- some already received (thanks Martin). Don't feel that you have to have the Arms formally described; although if we can tart up the description so that the College deigns to recognise them, so much the better. regards, Michael. A man dressed in a leather coat wanders into the pub. He is short and squat, carrying a pack over his left shoulder. He is unarmed and unarmoured, except for a cheap short sword, and a scruffy leather coat. He looks around the pub, and pauses briefly, clearly debating whether or not to leave. 'This is the pub where the Seagate Adventurers drink?' A wart-covered ogre leans out from the shadows and over the scarred bar. 'Yeah, dwarf-blood...Wossit to ya?', the ogre growls. Flinching, the man moves reflexively toward the door, and then stops. 'Um, I'm looking for some people who might help with a small problem my lord would like solved', he says, shuffling his feet, and wishing desperately he was somewhere else. There is a stir of vague interest in the room, some of the patrons turning to watch the poor wretch. He turns to the belligerent ogre. 'Ah...are there any private rooms here, sir ogre?' 'Downa back, stunt-bucket,' and a hairy, sausage-like finger points into the gloom further within. The man ducks his head, and addresses the room. 'If anyone wants to know more about the job, I'll meet with them in one of these private rooms.' He scuttles further into the bowels of the pub. Anyone entering the private room will find out the following from the small man: His name is Singlestick Trowel, he is a Tinker, an agent for the Lord of Tinkers, and as such will not die of old age. He has some special abilities, some of them spells, some of them talents, some of them magical items, some of them purely innate. His aura is checked to discover that he appears to be a Binder, with no spell of that college greater than Rank 6. He wants Adventurers to go to a plane called Westover, possibly others, and, basically, assassinate a powerful Sorcerer and Alchemist sequestered in a great complex beneath the Great Star. Trowel takes time to explain that Sorcery, as he uses the term, does not necessarily refer to the Mind college. Rather, it is a kind of magic that derives its source from negotiating with various extra-planar entities. Some of these are elemental, some are the spirits of more abstract concepts, like pain or confusion. Alchemy is also quite different, although with some similarities to the Skill Alusians are familiar with. The Alchemy he refers to can create powders, objects and substances of 'magical' or 'quasi magical' abilities. Payment will be 10,000sp, with salvage rights falling to the party. There are a few named items that the party's employer reserves for his own purposes. Singlestick will explain these to the party, at the appropriate time. Information from the Guild's Archives: The complex is known as the Temple of the Moon, and is huge...It is built into the side of a mountain of legendary proportions, and has been usurped by a number of conspiratorial groups, all of whom are overseen by a shadowy group called the Black Star Society. Little is known about these grises eminences, although it would not be inappropriate to assume there were many casters in their ranks. The military forces available, inside and outside the complex are called the Stormtroopers of the Holy Vehm, and their leaders sometime have access to magical weaponry, although few of them show any propensity for magic themselves. There are not very many of these troops, but, they are highly trained and elite troops. They might number, perhaps, 300 at each quadrant of the Temple... The Temple is, conservatively 75 miles across its diagonal, it being relatively square. And then there is Black Lead. Black Lead has little impact on mortals, although Immortals and Undying cannot even recognise it, nor can they recognise someone bearing it. Neither may they target them with their spells, even area affect spells. Environmental effect spells may sometimes have an effect. A wound inflicted by a weapon of Black Lead may only be healed by time. Magic, Herbalism or Healing Skills have no effect on treating the injury, although they may use these abilities to treat things like infection. This applies to mortals, as well. Warnings from Security: Do not reveal yourself as a Healer or Herbalist. Healers and Herbalists are rare and unusual creatures in this realm, and of those few that have been found, none were greater than Rank 2. An Adventurer who reveals himself to be one runs the risk of being abducted into the coterie of an Immortal. Do not reveal yourself as a Mind mage. This college is universally despised by the only people who know much about it. Immortals and their agents have been known to kill entities they suspected of being Mind mages. In addition, Telepathy is a conduit through which a Mind mage can contract a mental illness from any mind that is open to them. And there's this guy called Tom O'Bedlam... Do not reveal yourself as a Necromancer. Aside from its grim nature, this college is seen to be connected with the Inquisitors of the Church of Purity, a brutal bunch, by any definition, often attended by Temple Knights, or worse, Blood Knights. Wiccans would be wise to reveal their college only when forced to. The swamps and fens are filled with hags who practice that college at an expert level. Hags sometimes have an average Rank of 15 with the spells they know of that college, although Rank 10 is more common. Additionally, the Confessors of the Churh of Purity are Wiccans. And finally, a previous party encountered a Witchfinder on Westover, and he indicated that he was part of a larger group. The focus of their magic is to defeat Wiccans and Demon-pactors. Adventurers pacted to Demons would be likely to be a liability, rather than a bonus, although other pacts are less likely to be a problem. See Witchfinders above. Not exactly sure what is going on with Demons over there...More information would be welcome, so if any brave Demon-pacted soul would be keen, Security is prepared to underwrite their Guild costs to the tune of 10,000sp on presentation of a full report on their experiences. Note: Security and the Guild disavows and dissociates itself from any requirement on their part to recover the remains of such an individual, in the unlikely event of their violent demise...Or even their peaceful demise, actually. Other pacts are fine. Other colleges are fine. Entities capable of communicating with each other may enter into a Word of Binding. This is a contract to do or not do something. It must be agreed to by each party. It's impact can be felt in the soul of each party. Dire penalties are believed to accrue from failure to honour such a contract. Again, Security is interested in a report from anyone interested in purposely dishonouring such a Word of Binding. Security is not prepared to underwrite this in any way. Final warning: This realm seems to be connected with other planes, and the whole thing has some kind of meta-plane. Whatever the case, these planes are morally sensitive in some way, although Security is less than clear on this. We believe there have been changes in this area, anyway. Our latest solid information is that at some level, these planes recognise acts of evil, and don't like them. We believe that whatever agency is capable of recognising this kind of 'morally-pointed' act is not perfect, and sometimes makes mistakes. We know that it is not the act of some god or gods... Okay. Here's what I want in the way of players. 1) People who are capable of regularly turning up, even though the day of play may change from time to time. 2) I'm looking for Medium level characters, or higher. The danger level on this adventure would be Medium-High. And I mean it, too. 3) This is an adventure where a player might advance these Skills one Rank higher, to 8 +. Thief, Spy and Alchemist. 4) I want at least one spy/thief possibly with assassin ranks. 5) Trust me, a good Healer will be a real bonus. 6) Someone with Ranks in Divination. 7) Capable fighters, preferably with a college, and capable spell casters, who can contribute in combat, even if they don't have great attack spells. Dead weight will probably be the cause of death, either of themselves or another party member. This game will be for next season, or earlier, if enough people respond to jimarona@ihug.co.nz Please indicate the days you cannot or don't want to play on, and the time of day you want to play, as well.
