Minutes from the February Gods Meeting February 7th 1999 Present: Martin, Andrew, Paul, Kelsie, Jono, Mike, Rosemary, Jacqui, Keith, Ian 1) Price and Availability of Healing Herbs PCs seem to be coping well with the lack of Guild supplied healing in the game. This current shortage could still be going for a while. The only comment noted so far was that the lack of ready healing could be slowing down heroic acts. Costs should remain the same as they were but it is up to each individual GM about the price. It was reported that a current party have found an alternate supply for herbs required for Waters of Healing but trading from there may not occur for several months yet. 2) Probationary Status of Colleges It was pointed out that the Colleges of Ice, Bard and Binder are up for review at June, at the time that the revised rulebook is printed. People need to start thinking about whether or not that they should progress to full-fledged Colleges, stay probational, or be dropped. Feedback on any problems found should be sent for the people co-ordinating or to the Secretary so that any changes/fixes can be made. It was mentioned that not many people have generated characters for these colleges - maybe they were being put off by the probationary nature. 3) Fighting/Warrior Skill A proposal document was presented and discussed. Editing was required to split each component into three groups, keep, edit, and throw out. The intent was to appeal for non-mage fighters, hence the high EP requirements. It was asked whether the amount of time required could be reduced as it already takes a while to rank weapons. Also, instead of ranking styles for individual weapons, maybe they could be ranked for similar weapons. It is hoped that the many options presented would lead to more diversity in fighter characters but it was said that mage characters could also pick up fighting styles which would be to the detriment of their magical development. It was stated that this document was several steps in the right direction but still needed work. There was some confusion on the use of 'nemesis' abilities - abilities that counter other abilities. Maybe the term should be changed and maybe there should be only one 'strike-back' per ability. Also maybe any ability is automatically a nemesis to it's prerequisite. It was also asked that there should be more variation on initiative values 4) Fire College - Version 13 The current revision of the proposed new Fire College was presented. Several changes were suggested: Increase Temperature - Range shortened to touch or under 1 ft. Raise the EM to 100? Also could the Adept heat an object touched if they were under the effect of Fireproofing. The target needed to be changed to Volume/Object. Entity not allowed. Fireball - Reduce the EM to 350. Resist Cold. Change to Heat Shield Wall of Fire - It was felt that this was too powerful as in damage and three resistance checks. Also flammables and how much damage they take may need to be defined. A table is to be produced. Conversion suggestions are requested and these changes may be playtested next session. 5) Breakages Mike should have a document on breakages out in a few weeks, the same with Languages 6) Guild NPCs The list of NPCs in the Guild is to be moved from the Players Guide to the GM Guide and the Gazetteer. 7) Benefits/Costs of Nobility Ian is writing a resource document on the subject. It was suggested that the starting social standing grants rank bonuses to certain beginning skills. Certain things need to be done to maintain a social class. This document is to become GM resource material. 8) Previous Agenda Items The Secretary is to check previous agendas to see if any items have been 'lost'. Also any items not discussed because of lack of a quorum etc, is to be automatically added to the next one. 9) Powers A new document on Powers etc is being produced 10) Rulebook on the Web The rulebook should be available in printed form and electronic as a PDF document to anyone who asks but it was felt it should not be on the Web for copyright reasons. 11) PCs teaching spells Should the Guild be holding a monopoly on spells taught? It was felt that we shouldn't prevent PCs from teaching other PCs or PCs learning from alternate sources but the Guild should have its cut. Spells not taught by the Guild should also attract Guild tax. 12) Mind College The current revision is almost complete and should be posted soon. It was felt that Phantasm should not have a fright check. Also suggestions for an alternate version of Indetectability are required. 13) Bardic Changes The spell 'Great Shout' has been changed for 'Shout of Thunder' and an alternate proposal for it has been raised. Other suggestions for changes have been asked for. This >is simple, and about right. I like the geometric progression which results from this formula, but would prefer to see the figures somewhat rounder... I'd also suggest that the Guild would make exceptions for magics which directly increase the chances of parties surviving and returning a profit to the Guild. Primarily this would be healing spells, including Trollskin, and the Remove Curse ritual. Such magics would be priced lower to encourage PCs to learn them early in their adventuring career. This is the replacement for "Great Shout" I described at today's meeting. If there are no objections, I'd like to add this item to the next agenda. Shout of Thunder Range: 10 feet + 10/rank Duration: Immediate. Experience multiple: 250 Base Chance: 25% Resist: active & passive Target: entity Storage: investment, ward, magical trap. The Adept projects a thunderous shout of rage at the target. If the target fails to resist it suffers D-5 (+ 1/Rank) damage and is automatically stunned. The target will also be deafened for D-5 (+ 1/2 Ranks) minutes and will have a very nasty headache which will make concentration one level more difficult until it wears off or is cured by a healer. There is a chance equal to 5% + 1/rank that this deafness will be permanent until cured by the arts of a Healer of Rank 4 or greater, or by Ritual of Cure Deafness and Muteness. Further to the discussion we had at the meeting, I'd like to hear from people who have had problems with the Bardic College, so that those problems can be looked into, and hopefully, fixed. On the subject of the "Echosence" spell, something like this appears in AD&D called "Echolocation", GURPS called "Sound Vision", Ars Magica called "Eyes of the Bat" (in spite of the name, it's Air magic in that system), Rolemaster called "Batsense". Thought people might be interested to hear that it's not as unusual a spell effect as one might think... Thought people might be interested to hear > that it's not as unusual a spell effect as one might think... My objection to the spell is not whether or not it was unusual to find in a game system, just that it was an inappropriate spell for the genre, and for the college. This is a college about communication and people, possibly even including Elves. It is not a college about bats or dolphins. A beast mage of some sort might conceivably be able to be able to echo-locate (although they may not 'know' the mechanism by which they see with this sense). I find it hard to see how a 'Bard' would, unless you accept 'sound' based magic. I believe that song-, emotion-, and communication-based magic is at the root of a bardic college, and simple sound-based magic is more the province of a super-hero or futuristic game of some sort.
