A programmer/actor at my work distributed the following advice to our
company recently. I thought it may be of interest to some DQers, so
(with permission) I replicate it here:

A few of you have asked me now about extras casting for Lord of the
Rings, so I rang my agent and asked her the lowdown.
Basically, the actors casting hasn't been done yet - let alone the
extras casting, so you haven't missed out.

If you are an "unusual" body shape - ie: fat and dumpy & look like a
hobbit, tall&lanky, built like a brick shithouse (good if you want to be
an Orc)
(or just strappingly handsome -  like myself) you have a better chance
of getting
an Extras part. So start starving yourself, feeding your face, or taking
out your "do-it-yourself rack" depending on which way you want to go.

If you are keen to get involved now, contact an Extras agency such as
Showoff, Talento, or Modelpool and send in some photos
(carefully stretched to the right proportions on photoshop).
