The reason a spell or ritual cannot have a target of self is generally because this part of the game is designed to be developed slowly. Only a few characters would advance the ability. Now, the general feeling is that Enchantment is a 'bad' thing. There is no way that allowing the caster to target themselves is going to slow down the advance of what is already considered to be a 'bad' thing.
