I may not be at the meeting, so just a quick comment/suggestion on this: I think the two may have been the same until the Fire re-write. I have no concerns either way on the Range/EM, and think that it is fine that the two colleges have spells with different characteristics. I would suggest however, that as a general principle spells with the same name should have the same attributes. This reduces the chance of confusion by making the name a unique identifier. The reverse is also true -- spells with the same attributes and characteristics should have the same name. I would suggest that either the two spells be put back in synch (using whichever stats the GMs feel most appropriate), or one have its name changed. It might be most appropriate to change the Wiccan one -- there have been questions in past as to the relevance of "Hellfire" to the college -- and to give it a "look & feel" more in keeping with the overall theme. A similar thing was done in the past when the Nerco Hellfire became Necrosis, changing the fire effect for a rotting one but keeping most of the attributes similar. The effects as well as the Range & EM have been slightly changed with the fire re-write. Two options that I see: 1) Leave the fire college Range & EM as they were. This keeps it consistent with Wicca and keeps all of the changes in the same college. 2) Assuming that the new Fire college version is the better one (being most recently re-written), Wicca inherits the new version in its entirety. At least until the next rulebook when we'll have a new Wiccanised version. Without committing myself to supporting a change (being a rules conservative), I'm happy to discuss possible Wiccan 'look & feel'/'special effect' for a mass damage spell. General methods for creating damage: Impact, cutting, disease/pathology, heat, cold, twisting/bending/crushing (similar to impact, but slower). Of these, disease and twist/bend/crush seem slightly more witchlike than the others. None are a particularly good match, but I think that is because a mass damage spell doesn't really fit too well in the college in the first place. (IMAO.) How about violent muscle spasms? Side effects could include a chance of throwing away anything held in hand, or crushing it if it is fragile. Another possibility is creating/summoning a swarm of stinging/biting insects. This suggests an area of effect rather than number of targets, but arguably would have little effect on someone in plate. We could go for a malignant green glow that causes pain and drains life force. It is a bit bland however - 'generic damage'. Witches are known for ability in curses (and blessings) so I think it should be something with a curse flavour. Cheers --- ESSEX: The Final Chapter: Easter, April 22nd & 23rd 2000 Bridge Set Simulation Application Form WHAT’S IT ABOUT? (For those who are new to all this): Ten years ago, key members of the Science Fiction Modellers Club of New Zealand created the U.S.S. Essex Star Trek Bridge set. There has been ten years of great fun and adventure with this structure. Now, for a variety of reasons, this Easter Weekend is the last outing of the Bridge Set and the last opportunity to participate/act/roleplay on this wonderful set. We are looking for players to be on-set for the above dates at the Easter (Friday April 21st to 25th) Mini-Convention at the Camp Maynard Scoutcamp, Albany. Easter Saturday and Sunday are the days we are running the simulations, 2 per day starting at 1pm and 3pm, with an aim to finish each day at approximately 4:30pm. There will be a pre-game briefing for each game starting at 12:30pm and 2:30pm respectively. Every effort will be made to keep the games exciting and of no more than 60-to-80 minutes in length. WHAT’S A BRIDGE SET GAME? The Bridge is equipped with a main viewscreen, fully interactive science/library/communication/engineering/navigation and weapons consoles. The game is driven by Gamemasters who coordinate the consoles, sound effects and characters who work on and behind the Bridge Set. The stories follow no rigid, pre-determined path except what the player/characters influence with their decisions and actions. This is similar to Roleplaying, though the Gamemasters have thought of most eventualities and help guide and implement the character’s game decisions. No prior knowledge of Star Trek is needed, but a familiarity and even love of it certainly helps! The games are designed to entertain both the players and the audience, though due to a relative lack of space, there will only be limited room for onlookers. *NOTE 1: If you can provide your own Star Trek uniform, this will be a great help. If not, every effort will be made to provide you with one on the day. Classic 1960’s TV Trek is the preferred uniform, though is not essential. Consideration will certainly be given to those who have applied on a first-come-first-serve basis, but the producers and Game masters of the event reserve the right to pre-choose certain people for certain roles, or to substitute people at the last moment on the event of a no-show. WHAT WILL IT COST? The Mini-Convention will be an important fundraiser for next years National Con; Odysseycon. And there are some high costs associated with transporting and running the Bridge Set. We thought long and hard and came up with a high-value cost breakdown for what will be an excellent VERY long weekend! Those participating only in the simulations and those only there for the games as audience will be required to pay the excellent day convention rate of $15 per day, which includes a night’s stay. Game costs for the players only (not audience) are based on $10 dollars per simulation with discounts for more games played. Price breakdown follows: 1 DAY CON. REG. +PLUS 1 GAME = $25 1 DAY CON. REG. +PLUS 2 GAMES = $30 2 DAY CON. REG. +PLUS 2 GAMES = $45 2 DAY CON. REG. +PLUS 3 GAMES = $50 2 DAY CON. REG. +PLUS 4 GAMES = $60 NOTE: This is the preliminary application form for this project. Of course, in keeping with the "we're called wiccans now" aspect of these damned creatures they'll probably rechristen it "Heck-warmth." I'd favour a rewrite with the emphasis on the "Torment/ hell-rack" aspect, or if it remains a damage spell (immediate in effect) the "Affliction of the Damned." > Without committing myself to supporting a change (being a rules conservative), I'm > happy to discuss possible Wiccan 'look & feel'/'special effect' for a mass damage > spell. > General methods for creating damage: > Impact, cutting, disease/pathology, heat, cold, twisting/bending/crushing (similar > to impact, but slower). > > Of these, disease and twist/bend/crush seem slightly more witchlike than the > others.
