It seems many guild members have a feel good attitude towards giving charity to the poor. This should be however done carefully to avoid exasperating the problems. The road to hell is paved with good intentions.... Take for instance, on my previous adventure the good dwarf Goran AxeBiter gave a donkey to the halflings of sunnynook who already had one, this act of charity may well kill six or seven halflings. Why you ask ? Fifteen hafling families consume 120lb of grain a day to survive, One mule consumes 10-15lb, think of them as grain furnaces. Therefore 1 mule = six halflings, the were extremely marginal to begin with with no exess food so the mule will replace six halflings who will die. ( Perhaps a noble will be so kind as to confiscate both animals and increase the food per halfling by 1/4) Feed a man a fish and he has a meal, teach a man to fish and he has a life... The beggar cult of Diancecht gives out meals in old seagate ( soup kitchen ), this has attracted serfs off the land looking for an easy meal without having to farm. As more serfs and poorly skilled farmers leave the land the remaining farmers have to work harder to support the growing beggar population. In time this could become as serious issue, by feeding a beggar you are saying in effect that you like the idea of a lazy good for nothing serf sitting about watching three hard working farmers support him, I feel this is amoral. A better option is to oppresss the beggars to leave seagate and start supporting themselves, then small quantities of food or tools can be "gifted" to improve their miserable lives. Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind. Arnaud De Montfort ===== cheers noel __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! Sir Mortimer Graves Thank you for the kind offer, however the Kombination Baum-Holzschlagmassepflügt Maschine as you describe it is probably uneconomic in the face of the current low labour cost market. However a much needed addition to Seagate would be a town clock which could be used to time the hours of the day with a bell and allow fixed working hours to be set rather than shorter hours in winter and longer in summer. Extending the working day to forteen or fifteen hours a day with workers labouring under inexpensive lighting could dramatically boost the productivity of seagate industry and result in increased profits for both the duchy and the guilds. "Let them work to keep warm in winter." Arnaud De Montfort ===== cheers noel __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! Beggars are lay-about riffraff who absorb food and street-space without ever becoming useful, are untidy and smell. I am appalled to hear that there are several farmers working full-time to support each of these beggars. What a waste of effort. I agree with Arnold - you Carzalans should have a thorough spring-clean and drive out these people who are consuming all the wheat and stopping the farmers from providing food to those who earn it. I gave some food to the nicer-looking refugees to encourage them to dress tidily and queue in straight lines, but if the price of that is to take away my food, I'll take back the food I gave them. I thought that only hobbits were thieves - these people are stealing the food out of your mouths, and there is only one way to deal with such sociopathic behaviour.
