Hi,
Noel pointed out this web page - as well as giving quick break-downs of
towns & vilages for an area, it has a proportional list of occupations
(presumably based on a particular time & locale). This gives a good range of
occupations for NPCs for the GM to choose.

While the figures are going to be only approximate, they are a good
guideline if you have no idea about size of towns & cities in an area.
