I just had a look at the old players notes and the opening paragraph says 
"In August of 1981 a single gamemaster (GM), Robert Leyland, started a 
campaign based on the then new Dragonquest (DQ) game. Since that time, and 
with the help of more than a few GMs, the campaign has expanded to 
encompass roughly 50-60 players, over 100 active characters, roughly 15 
hard working GMs, and approximately as many worlds as 15 GMs can dream up."

Since it's now August 2001, that means that the campaign is 20 years old 
this month.
