The result is that, certainly bards can cast with sword > and shield in hand. Well... personal opinion of course... I like them casting while playing an instrument -- I'd even be happy with it being one that took both hands _and_ replaced speaking the components... e.g. flute... or bagpipes. I don't like the idea that an exemption for playing instruments automatically becomes a blanket exception to the free hands rule -- and I hadn't read it that way before.
