Sorry for general posting -- but does anyone have a working email for Bill Dyer who plays Brightflare? The address I had (atilla@slingshot.co.nz) is apparently no longer working. As a complete novice to the discussion - I read all the emails but the points seldom seemed to interact - I wonder if we can change it slightly. What is the Spy and Thief (climbing) sub-skills merely enable the character to use other sub-skills whilst climbing? Such as picking a lock on the window, hiding. Thus, you can do all those Thief/Spy things when your feet are on the ground, but not up a wall/cliff/tree etc unless you have the Climbing proficiency. <poor english but I am tired. As a GM I would encourage this - by maiming those without it. "As you stroll nonchallantly down a street, an young urchin falls silently to his retirement. A quiet 'Bugger' is all you hear from it. 'Should have learnt the climbing subskill' you mutter while taking its lock picks from limp hands." If this sub-proposal is not enough, then add in Stephen's "Use Rank/bonus" bit as well. cheers, Ian -- to unsubscribe notify mailto:dq-request@dq.sf.org.nz -- |

The main reason for the 2% per rank bonus and using Thief Rank instead of Climbing rank is so current thieves interested in climbing maintain the same base chance as they previously had. I suggest we keep that but having the Thief abilities while climbing seems a nicer and more generic bonus than restricting it to stealth. > > As a complete novice to the discussion - I read all the emails but the > points seldom seemed to interact - I wonder if we can change it slightly. > > What is the Spy and Thief (climbing) sub-skills merely enable the character > to use other sub-skills whilst climbing? I like this! Why a theif with all the other things they have to learn should be better at climbing than adventurer of the same rank climbing skill who practiced climbing ONLY for the same number of weeks is a mystery? If however we were to say as above that the theives climbing subskill is the practice of the breaking and entering, etc. skills while hanging upsidedown from a tree branch, off a rope or on to a windowledge with one hand, well that makes more sence to me. Then we just have the one over all climbing BC ( withGM mods) for any climbing on any surface. Just what that BC should be? well I like the idea of adding PS and PC into the formular but thats as far as Ive got. Helen Saggers -- to unsubscribe notify mailto:dq-request@dq.sf.org.nz -- |

> As it looks like Mandos has left I'll try to remember what he said when I > asked him in the weekend on this. The idea is that it is an option to allow theives to work as a team effectivly in various nefarious dealings. As with many potential options in the game it is mostly for flavour and may have no benefit to the game. However lack of direct benefit did not seem to be a good enough reason to remove it and it does add some flavour to the skill. On the climbing subject I have read all the comments. I appreciate Stephen and other points that having a single climbing skill is preferable in game from the simplicity point of view. (You don't need to shout any more :-) However I firmly believe that the art of climbing into a house is redically different to climbing a cliff face. The only reason they are even remotly similar is they both have the word climbing in the description. When climbing a man-made structure the skill is in knowing how the properties of that structure work, what the climable paterns are and knowing how something it built. On a cliff face more care is required, more caution, more tools and a completly different skillset. I don't think it detracts from the game to allow theives to only climb buildings and I do think it adds to the flavour and feeling of being a thief. It also adds restrictions to what was previously a rediculous portion of the skill. After relooking at it the base chances do include stealth for the stealth climbing and I think they are reasonable and are something that should be ironed out in playtest. So for voting on Sunday the only change should be to remove the paragraph detailing that the best of Spy or Thief should be used if the character has both. What is done to it after playtest or what people choose to do to this or the climbing skill if people do not choose to vote for it is up to whoever wants to look at it next.
