A Church representative enters the Pub and hammers a large scroll up on
the noticeboard.

Rumour is our Enemy
Continued discussions and debate surrounding the loss of Henri D'guisard
are to be considered counter to the war effort. Those found to be
discussing this issue will be dealt with under Section 432 of the edits
of the Church of light .

There has been no ambushes north of seagate, nor have any of the Scouts
of Michael been lost to combat activity..

So, how are such edicts normally enforced in Carzala?

Have there been any changes to the theory or practice of how church law is
applied in the Baronies and Kingdom of late?

Church edicts are not law in Carzala. The Duke sets the Law.
But depending on how important it is, who it is, what the political situation is, etc. then
extradition is possible, or just turning a blind eye is more likely.

But if they can get you within one of their churches or chapter houses then the blind eye is
almost always turned.

The guild requires we abide by the laws of the land we are in, which is the Dukes law in Carzala.

So feel free to break the church edicts provided you don't get caught or you have enough political
or personal clout to get away with it.

...
Time for pint and a pipe I think, a quick cantrip to light the pipe... oh darn! It backfired and
set the edict alight! [sigh] This magic stuff is so tricky.

If only we had a Michaeline scout to track down the demonic minion that obviously made the magic
go arwy in such an awful fashion. A pity they're all on extended leave north of Seagate.

It's just as well that the war is going so well...

Well, there's how things work in theory, and how they work in practice.

Now theoretically, the Western Church only holds temporal power over
areas where it also holds lands... Mordeaux being the obvious example.
Get in trouble with the town guards inside Mordeaux and you're liable to
find that the Magistrate you're hauled before is at least a lay member,
but more likely a knight of Uriel. Also the Gabrielite inquisition has
the power there to investigate for subversive publications and the like.
All of which might explain why most Guild members avoid the place like a
plague ship.

Down here in Carzala, the courts are Ducal rather than religious. The
inquisition can investigate their own churches of course-- and
discipline their own clergy with scourgings or whatever it is that
religious zealots do -- but have no theoretical ability to investigate
or prosecute subversion or other crimes.

Practically, on the other hand, if a bunch of inquisitors or other
church knights (of whom you may have noticed there are a fair few around
here these days), were to simply drag you off the street and lock you
up, well, it could be some time before your friends or the Guild could
get the Duke's court to accept a writ of "habeas corpus ad
subjiciendum", and order the Church to hand you back. And that's
assuming that in the meantime the gabbies hadn't hauled you off to
Mordeaux, in which case the whole thing would become a major political
matter... and then the Duke could be deciding whether you or the Church
was more critical to the war effort.

All of which means, that should some nice church folk suggest that you
accompany them, you would be going voluntarily (in a theoretical sense
at least), or you could choose to reject their kind offer, and should
they become unreasonable, defend yourself with such force as you feel
you'll be able to justify (if necessary) in the Duke's court -- as you
would against any other attempted abduction.

What I want to know is: who's letting all these riff-raff into the Guild
pub, and have they paid their membership dues?

If any member of the Gabrielite Inquisition does abduct - I mean arrest
- you, protest verbally, then request the presence of your personal
priest, a request they CANNOT decline. Then ask for me; at a minimum I
will let the guild know where you are, and I might be able to assist you
directly. If you are a demon worshipper, don't say I'm your priest - ask
to confess to me instead.

Your Friendly Gabrielite Inquisitor,

Sir Christopher

It's a result of all the secondments and theoretical signing-up of Guild
members to various military and semi-military units over the years - there
are reciprocal messing rights in place with many units. Unless they won't
pay their bill, we can't throw them out.

And if you're on good terms with the occupants of a Church building powerful
enough to prevent the Gabrielites physically entering, you can make a break
for Temple Row.

Assuming of course that Sir Christoper was not ordered by his superiors
in the Church to conceal your whereabouts. Although I have every
confidence that he would attempt to find a way out of such a moral quandary.

<Sir Christopher> gosh, anyone seen Mortimer recently? hmm, did anyone hear him say something about free speach? Hope he is warm and dry but _not_ too toasty....

<guild security> Wha?

Subject[dq-pub] NEWS - The Eltrandorians have departed Seagate
FromChris Caulfield
DateMon, 30 May 2005 14:37:32 +1200 (NZST)
Information gleaned over pints in pubs or other sources around Seagate.

The Eltrandorian Brigades (Kiltary Heavy Brigade and the Halph Brigade)
that have been engaged in training and other exercises with Carzalan
forces over the last few months moved out last night in great haste
heading eastwards. The Cavalry left at speed with the Heavy Infantry
following on wagons, by foot or in some cases on shadow wings/clouds.
Artillery pieces have been left 'in situ' for later transport and
emplacements left for use by other units.

The troops numbering some 3000 or more have been a feature of Seagate
since they arrived in Summer 805 and were quartered in the fields to the
North of Arns Ferry and East of Seagate.

The sudden departure is perhaps related to the increase in flying troops
of recent days but there has been no official word on this other than this
statement by William Arnson (the Carzalan Military Liason).

"This is an opportune time for any large units to depart prior to the
winter rains, which are due soonish. The Eltrandorian troops have been
of great assistance here but no doubt will be better utilised closer to
the frontlines."

Subject[dq] Two Weeks To Go!
FromStephen Martin
DateMon, 30 May 2005 15:20:46 +1200 (NZST)
Just under two weeks to go to the next guild meeting.

The meeting is at 1pm Sunday 12th June, at the Grey Lynn Hall. Same time and place as the March
meeting.

Nothing special on the agenda at the moment, if you have anything then please add it and post it
to the DQ lists if appropriate.
http://www.dragonquest.org.nz/dqwiki/index.php/Guild_Meeting_June_2005

Thinking about GMing but stuck for ideas? Talk to the campaign committee, they have lots of
interesting ideas for toying with innocent adventurers.

Not thinking about GMing? Why Not? It's winter, a perfect time for evenings in front of a warm
fire torturing - I mean entertaining - your friends.

It's also time for SGT submissions. Artlices, letters, rumours, gossip, quotes, puzzles, etc.
Either send them to Keith, or enter them in on-line:

Cheers, Stephen.

Subject[dq-pub] Gossip in Seagate
FromMandos Mitchinson
DateMon, 30 May 2005 17:28:15 +1200
All around Seagate a similar scene is played out in Inn's and Taverns. In
the Inn a gossip is sitting in the corner telling his tales.

'It turns out that a group of Michealine scouts were up in the area of north
Brastor when they started arguing amonst themseves. While distracted a
number of Skeletal knights rode them down and killed 4 of them. The
remaining four Michealines fled back to the monks at Tor's Folly, however
they were hunted down and slain with the exception of a bloke called Henri
who made it to the folly. Apparently after resting for a few days, fights
were breaking out amonst the Monks and they started killing each other. At
the height of the fighting Skeletal knights again appeared to slaughter the
monks. Apparently this Bloke Henri arrived back in seagate a few days later
with very little memory and the Mind Mages have been working on him since to
try and work out what happened. Turns out he had just come from talking to
Guild mind mages when the poor bastar……Urch….'

At this point the gossip is interupted by a large hand picking up the gossip
and arresting him in the name of the Church for Treason.

Later that night 46 people are transported to Mordeux for judgement.
