This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_0004_01C565BD.A5ABEF20 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Hi all I am posting this for feedback and general comment from people. I have included at the end of the post two recipes, but I can provide others if people like. Things to note: No items will be permanent by some will be semi-permanent. Recipes for making interesting things When we say recipes, we are not limiting ourselves to cooking or baking. Overview: The idea is to create a system that players can drive with very little demand on GMs, and that is interesting for people. We will generate some recipes that involve having the skills needed to create something of note. Often this will have to be created in a place of note with the ingredients needed given the special event. Often the recipes will require ingredients ranging from write ups from GMs to common items that are store bought. The resulting items will be character made and could be wide ranging in effect. No items will be permanent by some will be semi-permanent. The Guild of Seagate Adventurers: Press release at the introduction of the recipes system into DQ. "The Guild Council is pleased to inform the membership of some good news in these troubled times. Some pages from the fabled book Sith, which contains great knowledge and secrets of mystical powers, have become available to the guild. We believe these will be of assistance to most guild members. This book is available for guild members to use, but is not to be divulged to non guild members. We are inviting guild members to add to the book as large parts of it are still missing." Real World: There will be a general release at a guild meeting of the first 25 or so recipes. The format will be as a special supplement to players alongside the Seagate Times, but not under the title of the SGT. Players can pay with a gold coin at a Guild Meeting if they want one, or they can download and print it if they wish. Websites: I will aim to publish the documents on the DQWiki or on Mandos' website as people wish. Description of the Recipes System Here is an example of a recipe for Seagate White Tea. There are two other recipes at the end and the second recipe needs the item resulting from the first recipe as its main ingredient. _____ Seagate White Tea Overview: This makes some special tea which often makes the imbiber more alert. Ingredients needed: Red tea (common), red cockatrice feather (loot, uncommon), flask of water (common). Instructions: Combine all ingredients in a medicine pot on the 5th 15th or 25th of the month. Items needed for this recipe can be found in: Carzarla Countryside Berastor Holdings Countryside Sea of Grass Place that the recipe needs to be made: Any High Mana area The recipe is preformed: 5th 15th or 25th of the month Frequency is: Trade skill Made in a: medicine pot, travilling medicine pot Skills needed: Brewing 2, cooking 3 End result is on success Seagate White Tea This recipe will yield: 4 units. The result can be used in a recipe Time to make: 10 hours minus skill rank (minimum 1 hour) Seagate White Tea This item comes from: Trade skill. Weight: 4 ounces The result can be used in a recipe 4 X Seagate White Tea Effects: Adds +2 perception to the drinker up to a max of 15 until midnight. Will expire: 15-Heat 804 GM: _____ Events: Events - are dates or activities on a day, and are often tied to a place of note. White Lotus, Summer Solstice, Day of Death, Autumn Equinox, Blue Moons, High Holidays, All hallowed Mass Here are four examples: Someone trying to carry out a recipe could be required to cut four branches of Mistletoe on a precise date or given night with a pure golden and silver blade. The wife of recently dead Mr Smith wants to talk to him again, and so she organizes with the Wise woman of the village that they perform a ritual on the "Day of the Dead' to talk to him. Others may need to create the event such as - "when a swarm of green backed toads migrate north from the Falgeso Forest under the full moon, then kill 3 large frogs and boil them down for their fat" - They character may wish to help this along by feeding the frogs over the months beforehand and killing some of the frogs' natural predators. On the night of 'All Hallowed Mass', the dark night of Wicca, where Witches come out to play and mothers send their children to bed early, the Witches that are friendly to the coven of Slippery Rock gather for 'pagan rituals' which to the outside world look like just a festival. The Wicca use the opportunity to perform some of the recipe magics known to them, such as empowering their Flying broomsticks for the following year. Not necessarily all of the Wicca at the event will know all of the details of the rituals that all to the coven are performing. Wicca that miss this opportunity will have to bless their broomsticks monthly with special ingredients to empower them to fly. Places of Note: Places of Note are places in the world where some events can happen. They can range in size, a specific stone to a county or other huge area. They often have something obvious that has made the Place Of Note such as higher in mana, lower in mana, a graveyard, and blessed grounds. Also a safety note is provided for the area. Here are four examples: Southern Forests of Bowcourt west of the northern main road (large area, safe). The Fastness of Girwyllan (large area), standing stones in the centre of the main valley inside the region of the Fastness of Girwyllan (small area, unsafe). The Wicca blessed hills east of Slippery Rock, The huge natural river-bored stone in 'The River Running', south of the guild. It is found on the southern bank, and the bored hole is only out of the water after the heat of summer. Time involved: Often these recipes/rituals will take time. Minor effects recipes will take hours, larger items/effects recipes will take days, weeks and sometimes months. Here is a general guide: Easy - should take hours to do in total, Moderate - take days to do in total Hard - take months to do in total Very Hard - take years to do in total Skills needed: Often these recipes/rituals will require the use of a skill. These skills have no chance of failing. You only need to be equal to or higher rank than needed. The person performing the recipe, or a specific stage of the recipe, must have all of the skills involved. Often these items are able to be traded to other characters to perform the next step as needed. Often a supporting tool is needed for the skill. They take time and in general is equal to rank X hours minimum. They cost rank fatigue to conduct. Ingredients: Recipes need ingredients to work. Ingredients have an availability aspect to them. They are rated as: Common, Uncommon, Rare, Very Rare and Unique. The common items are purchased from the standard price list, while the rest are gained from adventure or as payment from the Guild. GMs can download the DQ GM Recipes Magic Standard Items document from the website. The document is an MS Word document for editing, PDF document for printing. The documents are balanced to provide a normal spread of items in the correct distribution numbers given their availability. The aim of these documents will be to provide write ups for GMs to use as loot for characters. Item Write-ups: There are four types of items written up for the Recipe system. These are: Ingredients write-up: These are gained by characters on an adventure or by characters combining other ingredients that result in a new write-up, or can be purchased off other characters. GMs should hand out signed standard or custom write-ups for the items. Standard write ups are available for GMs to download if they wish. A Recipe write-up: GMs can hand recipes out to adventurers as loot, or for gaining Rank 8 in a Skill. They can be sold to the Guild for a single Uncommon or Rare write-up depending on the recipe. The guild will make them available to all guild members. Item write-up: When a player wishes to make an item using the Recipe system, then at a guild meeting or at the start of an adventure (when ranking is done), the player gains the consent of a GM and has the new items signed off. The Ingredients write-up is then destroyed. Resource chit: These are gained by characters on an adventure. GMs should hand out either standard or custom write-ups for the items. See below (Farming Ingredients) for example. Standard write-ups are available for GMs. Resource chits have a number of harvests. They have a recharge date and an expiry date. Locations: Locations are used to note a place where Ingredients can be found. Here are four examples: Red cockatrice feather - can be found uncommonly in the location of: Sea of Grass. Blue Waters - can be found uncommonly in the Fastness of Girwillyan Skeleton Bones - can be found uncommonly in most places where lesser undead dwell. Green Vines - can be found in the foothills to the west of Cazarla. Sessions: Sessions are used to say when the Ingredients can be found. It also denotes a timeframe on occasions for performing a recipe action. The four sessions are: Summer - Meadow, Heat, Breeze Autumn - Fruit, Harvest, Vintage Winter - Frost, Snow, Ice Spring - Thaw, Seedtime, Blossom Farming Ingredients: Farming ingredients could become a game breaking effect. For this reason I feel it is best to limit it immediately. The way we artificially limit this is with the use of Resource chit. Resource chits can be given out by GMs to players granting them access to something a number of times. When a character wants to tell another character about this knowledge/or item, they give them a new ingredients write-up and adjust their Resource chit by one. For example: Martin playing Mortimer, Kelsie playing Clementine. So if Clementine wanted to give Mortimer 3 Tine Nuts, then Clementine could do so only if Kelsie has a Resource chit for Tine Nuts and has a value of 4 or more. Kelsie would lower the amount by 3 and give a new ingredients write-up to Martin for Mortimer. Kelsie can only lower her Resource chit to a minimum of 3 and if she wished to lower it to zero then the Resource chit is used up permanently and will not recharge. Simple charm of friendship: This charm will help in dealings with a person by making by raising the reaction roll to you by one place, up to X Ingredients Hair from the person. Thin copper sheet metal - common 10sp Wax 1 ounce - common Toad fat 3 ounce - uncommon 4sp A swan feather - common Black Ink - uncommon 3sp Fresh Owls blood - 3 drops Instructions: Roll the wax into five small balls. Soak the balls in toad fat and leave on the swan feather for 1 week in the sunshine in the session of summer in a week of Meadow. By the end of the week, the wax balls should have turned blue in colour. Heat the black ink in a silver bowl over a candle at nighttime. Once warm add three drops of fresh owl blood from the Fastness of Girwyllan. Take some of the person's hair. Roll the hair into the blue wax balls. Get a two or three inch piece of copper sheet metal. Use the fresh owl ink to write the name of the person on the copper sheet. Under a clear full moon night sky, fold the wax balls into the copper sheet. On the next night form the copper sheet into a pendant in the shape of a disk. Wear the copper pendant around your neck for seven days in a high mana area, and do not go swimming with it. This pendant will normally last until White Lotus day. Skills: Metalworking rank 2 Writing rank 3 Potion of health: This potion will help in dealings with pain in general. Discomfort such as back pain will be reduced. Specifically it will add an artificial effect of having an additional 10 points of endurance, when working out if you become stunned in combat. These are not real endurance points and do not count for other things at all. The potion while not imbibed will last until the next equinox. When imbibed it will last for the maker's Alchemy rank x days. Ingredients Simple charm of friendship Potion of Green waters - uncommon. Instructions: Take the pendant (Simple charm of friendship ) and boil in Green Waters below the clay cliffs in the Fastness of Girwyllan, for 3 hours, adding 1 pint of river water each hour. At the end this will make one Potion of Health. Skills: Cooking rank 3 Alchemy rank 6 Jonathan Bean Business Development Manager TME - Its all about time Phone 966 1656 PO Box 35902, Browns Bay Fax 448 1051 Auckalnd, New Zealand Mob 021 173 4060 www.tme.co.nz Free 0800 55 33 66 ------=_NextPart_000_0004_01C565BD.A5ABEF20 Content-Type: text/html; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable <html xmlns:v=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:vml" = xmlns:o=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" = xmlns:w=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:word" = xmlns:st1=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" = xmlns=3D"http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40"> <head> <META HTTP-EQUIV=3D"Content-Type" CONTENT=3D"text/html; = charset=3Dus-ascii"> <meta name=3DGenerator content=3D"Microsoft Word 11 (filtered medium)"> <!--[if !mso]> <style> v\:* {behavior:url(#default#VML);} o\:* {behavior:url(#default#VML);} w\:* {behavior:url(#default#VML);} .shape {behavior:url(#default#VML);} </style> <![endif]--><o:SmartTagType namespaceuri=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" = name=3D"country-region"/> <o:SmartTagType = namespaceuri=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name=3D"City"/> <o:SmartTagType = namespaceuri=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name=3D"Street"/> <o:SmartTagType = namespaceuri=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name=3D"address"/> <o:SmartTagType = namespaceuri=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name=3D"PlaceType"/> <o:SmartTagType = namespaceuri=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name=3D"PlaceName"/> <o:SmartTagType = namespaceuri=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" name=3D"place"/> <!--[if !mso]> <style> st1\:*{behavior:url(#default#ieooui) } </style> <![endif]--> <style> <!-- /* Font Definitions */ @font-face {font-family:Papyrus; panose-1:3 7 5 2 6 5 2 3 2 5;} /* Style Definitions */ p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {margin:0cm; margin-bottom:.0001pt; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman";} a:link, span.MsoHyperlink {color:blue; text-decoration:underline;} a:visited, span.MsoHyperlinkFollowed {color:purple; text-decoration:underline;} span.EmailStyle17 {mso-style-type:personal-compose; font-family:Arial; color:windowtext;} @page Section1 {size:595.3pt 841.9pt; margin:72.0pt 90.0pt 72.0pt 90.0pt;} div.Section1 {page:Section1;} --> </style> </head> <body lang=3DEN-US link=3Dblue vlink=3Dpurple> <div class=3DSection1> <p class=3DMsoNormal><font size=3D2 face=3DArial><span lang=3DEN-NZ = style=3D'font-size: 10.0pt;font-family:Arial'>Hi all<o:p></o:p></span></font></p> <p class=3DMsoNormal><font size=3D2 face=3DArial><span lang=3DEN-NZ = style=3D'font-size: 10.0pt;font-family:Arial'><o:p> </o:p></span></font></p> <p class=3DMsoNormal><font size=3D2 face=3DArial><span lang=3DEN-NZ = style=3D'font-size: 10.0pt;font-family:Arial'>I am posting this for feedback and general = comment from people. This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------_=_NextPart_001_01C56560.B685DBC8 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Hi, What is the game driver for this list of player-creatable items? =20 It seems to give a reason to rank skills and spend time doing other things than ranking, to interact with the environment and geography, and to develop contacts to assist with these items. It also creates a magical alchemy system like a small binder / shaper / fantasy hedge-witch, which is an interesting form of magic contrasting with the combat-oriented adventuring colleges. =20 However, my cynicism says this will be used by many people to just give extra bonuses they can easily buy with money. It gives players the power to just have magic items. My 2cp worth, Since this game is DRAGONQUEST and not EVERQUEST (the MMORPG) and in game we have all the items, skills and abilities to create these items I can't see the need to change the existing system. The game has enough wild, hoopy and different items in it at the moment and they skew the game as it stands. Is the game to be based on how the players role play or can they overpower whatever they face by having superior firepower in terms of weapons, spells etc? EVERQUEST involves gaining as many hoopy items/spells as you can and gaining levels and therefore power. Surely we don't want DRAGONQUEST to be based purely on your horde of items rather than the interaction, cunning, planning and playing of players. As some people know I have enjoyed and still enjoy playing Everquest. This is not an attempt by me to make DQ into EQ at all and you have to take that at face value. This is not an attempt to change the existing system but to add to it. Something's like Wicca Amulets could be changed (and maybe should be) but that's not what I'm talking about. The system is designed to be limited by write-ups from adventures, and cast to be only a minor part of it. Skills, time and write-ups will have more impact on availability than cash. A clear system where all players and characters can use it if they choose I see as a desirable thing. It gives players the power to just have magic items This doesn't give players the power to just have magic items As the player grows in contacts and money, they can have most of these items on tap, further fuelling the propensity to reach for an item rather than thinking. Money is a minor part. Contacts also a minor part. They can not have most of these items on tap. If you wish to change what I have suggested then you could change the balance to a money based system, instead of a write-up from adventure based system/skill use system. This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_0019_01C565D2.E4895470 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Some people know that Kelsie made a map of Seagate City. It was saved onto CD in a Mac format. Clare kindly was able to read the Mac CD and email it to me, and I have put it up on my mothers website. Some of the GM guides have the map inside it others did not. Here is a link to the 1MB jpg file that is the map without the text layer. http://www.parituhu.co.nz/jono/Seagate.jpg Here is a link to the text layer for the map. http://www.parituhu.co.nz/jono/seagate1.jpg It may be on interest to some people. I can't see what benefit these changes can bring to DQ. The key question here is: - What is lacking in the game that these recipes are needed to address? I am an ex EQ player and I know about all these from that style of gaming. But EQ is about gaining better and better items either by discovery or creation and no actual Roleplaying which is what DQ is about. Online gaming cannot replicate the play of a bunch of PC's in a room together discussing actions, reactions etc. We have Shapers to create items, Wicca for amulets and other colleges create various other items for use by PC's. This means that the colleges and the PC's choices (of colleges (or non colleges), weapons, skills etc)determine what they can and cannot do rather than their equipment. In DQ we gain items for use and a lot of times to fit with the PC's character, persona etc but the main thing is the Roleplaying of the PC by a player. Apologies Jono, these sound like I'm slating your ideas for the sake of it but I'm not, I just like the DQ system the way it is - with all its foibles, faults and issues. I like the idea of developing PC interactions with the world, environment & geography that are outside of guild missions and developing contacts, influencing events, building relationships etc, however I too retain the cynacism Andrew has expressed. This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=____1117496271519_6-WjIP+GZz Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit my immediate thought is 'no'. i think the main point is, Jono, that a PC can purchase a write up from another player, and so availability becomes: time and opportunity (to make it yourself) OR money and contacts (contacts to know a PC/NPC that has the appropriate item or skill) and (money to buy the thing off them). So it comes down to networking, which works well on-line, but for some reason does not work well at the guild. Historically small groups share ideas and items, and everyone else plays another game. Also, i don't like it very much. If the game was supposed to have stats reaching 100 then the game would have it in there. The first example increases PC. yippee. No doubt there are ways to increase every stat. As a GM we don't want everyone to see everything. Things the party has to see are given to them without a PC check (or Pc check indicates who saw it first or most). IT is hard enough to grind them down already. This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_0024_01C565D8.86AA0D80 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Chris Caulfield I can't see what benefit these changes can bring to DQ. The key question here is: - What is lacking in the game that these recipes are needed to address? JB: Character and player determination of quests and results across a multi-GM-Game, independent of a single GM. I hope it will change the culture from a cash system to quest system. This is an opportunity to allow characters to work towards things that they can not normally do - such as make a rock which keeps rats away from a house, Talk to the dead. Etc The use of write-ups was intended from the start so players can swap with other players at guild meetings. I hope that the requirements of places/events/skills and time and write-ups for ingredient - will limit if not completely stop the heavy involvement of wide scale NPC, but retain the system it in the hands of characters and players. JB: Forget EQ I don't think it is relevant. We have Shapers to create items, Wicca for amulets and other colleges create various other items for use by PC's. This means that the colleges and the PC's choices (of colleges (or non colleges), weapons, skills etc)determine what they can and cannot do rather than their equipment. JB: Wicca amulets are broke. Players can for the most part not make anything for themselves, such as a rock to keep rats away. Look upon this as a formal system for quests. In DQ we gain items for use and a lot of times to fit with the PC's character, persona etc but the main thing is the Roleplaying of the PC by a player. JB: I agree - but again GMs give out items and its all about freeing the restraints that GMs have to do all the work. Players should be able to guide their own directions. Chris JB: I don't think I can not help you with you cynacism. ------=_NextPart_000_0024_01C565D8.86AA0D80 Content-Type: text/html; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable <html xmlns:o=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" = xmlns:w=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:word" = xmlns=3D"http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40"> <head> <meta http-equiv=3DContent-Type content=3D"text/html; = charset=3Dus-ascii"> <meta name=3DGenerator content=3D"Microsoft Word 11 (filtered medium)"> <style> <!-- /* Style Definitions */ p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {margin:0cm; margin-bottom:.0001pt; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman";} a:link, span.MsoHyperlink {color:blue; text-decoration:underline;} a:visited, span.MsoHyperlinkFollowed {color:purple; text-decoration:underline;} p.MsoPlainText, li.MsoPlainText, div.MsoPlainText {margin:0cm; margin-bottom:.0001pt; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Courier New";} @page Section1 {size:595.3pt 841.9pt; margin:72.0pt 69.6pt 72.0pt 69.6pt;} div.Section1 {page:Section1;} --> </style> </head> <body lang=3DEN-US link=3Dblue vlink=3Dpurple> <div class=3DSection1> <p class=3DMsoPlainText><font size=3D2 color=3D"#3366ff" face=3D"Courier = New"><span style=3D'font-size:10.0pt;color:#3366FF'>Chris Caulfield<br> </span><span lang=3DEN-NZ>I can't see what benefit these changes can = bring to DQ.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p> <p class=3DMsoPlainText><font size=3D2 color=3D"#3366ff" face=3D"Courier = New"><span lang=3DEN-NZ = style=3D'font-size:10.0pt;color:#3366FF'><o:p> </o:p></span></font><= /p> <p class=3DMsoPlainText><font size=3D2 color=3D"#3366ff" face=3D"Courier = New"><span lang=3DEN-NZ style=3D'font-size:10.0pt;color:#3366FF'>The key question = here is:<o:p></o:p></span></font></p> <p class=3DMsoPlainText><font size=3D2 color=3D"#3366ff" face=3D"Courier = New"><span lang=3DEN-NZ style=3D'font-size:10.0pt;color:#3366FF'>- What is lacking = in the game that these recipes are needed to address?<o:p></o:p></span></font></p> <p class=3DMsoPlainText><font size=3D2 color=3D"#3366ff" face=3D"Courier = New"><span lang=3DEN-NZ = style=3D'font-size:10.0pt;color:#3366FF'><o:p> </o:p></span></font><= /p> <p class=3DMsoPlainText><font size=3D2 color=3Dblack face=3D"Courier = New"><span lang=3DEN-NZ style=3D'font-size:10.0pt;color:black'>JB: = <o:p></o:p></span></font></p> <p class=3DMsoPlainText><font size=3D2 color=3Dblack face=3D"Courier = New"><span lang=3DEN-NZ style=3D'font-size:10.0pt;color:black'>Character and player determination of quests and results across a multi-GM-Game, independent = of a single GM. This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_002B_01C565DF.EE05B130 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Ian wrote: my immediate thought is 'no'. JB: I think the defensive nature opting for the status quo of most people (normally myself included) has made it a given that the immediate reaction is "no" or "no thanks". I don't see any value in people just saying no - I need to understand why they say no, which you have stated. i think the main point is, Jono, that a PC can purchase a write up from another player, and so availability becomes: time and opportunity (to make it yourself) OR money and contacts (contacts to know a PC/NPC that has the appropriate item or skill) and (money to buy the thing off them). So it comes down to networking, which works well on-line, but for some reason does not work well at the guild. Historically small groups share ideas and items, and everyone else plays another game. JB: Players swapping magic items and services already happen at guild meetings and I expect that this will add to it to a limited degree. Players will swap write-ups for items to put into recipes. My reaction to this is great - excellent. Yes I agree with you. It will still remain easier for characters to go an adventure and gain a magic item XYZ from a GM as normal loot, than to gain any substantial items from this system. All this is doing is allowing players to effectivly quest for an item. So what is the harm? Also, i don't like it very much. If the game was supposed to have stats reaching 100 then the game would have it in there. The first example increases PC. yippee. No doubt there are ways to increase every stat. As a GM we don't want everyone to see everything. Things the party has to see are given to them without a PC check (or Pc check indicates who saw it first or most). IT is hard enough to grind them down already. JB: With your ground down players do you add any spices or flavourings? It will give PCs something to do with all those bits and bobs from critters besides turning them over to alchemists for a big wad of sp. It gives alchemist and herbalist PCs something to do. It gives adventure oppotunities along the lines of 'Silverthorn' and instead of the PCs going to get the Widget for some shadowy NPC it's for themselves. Somehow I don't see PCs separating themselves from magic item components they paid a lot for (in terms of spent resources and/or EN points) without something equally worthwhile back. This also gives an outlet and formal use for the strange metal, cockatrice blood, wraith bones and other non-specific wierdness I've handed out ------=_NextPart_000_0006_01C565F0.5E172A20 Content-Type: text/html; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"> <HTML xmlns=3D"http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40" xmlns:v =3D=20 "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:vml" xmlns:o =3D=20 "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" xmlns:w =3D=20 "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:word" xmlns:x =3D=20 "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:excel" xmlns:st1 =3D=20 "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"><HEAD><TITLE>Message</TITLE>= <META http-equiv=3DContent-Type content=3D"text/html; = charset=3Diso-8859-1"> <META content=3D"MSHTML 6.00.2800.1458" name=3DGENERATOR><!--[if !mso]> <STYLE>v\:* { BEHAVIOR: url(#default#VML) } o\:* { BEHAVIOR: url(#default#VML) } w\:* { BEHAVIOR: url(#default#VML) } .shape { BEHAVIOR: url(#default#VML) } </STYLE> <![endif]--><o:SmartTagType name=3D"State"=20 namespaceuri=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"></o:SmartTagT= ype><o:SmartTagType=20 name=3D"country-region"=20 namespaceuri=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"></o:SmartTagT= ype><o:SmartTagType=20 name=3D"City"=20 namespaceuri=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"></o:SmartTagT= ype><o:SmartTagType=20 name=3D"Street"=20 namespaceuri=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"></o:SmartTagT= ype><o:SmartTagType=20 name=3D"address"=20 namespaceuri=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"></o:SmartTagT= ype><o:SmartTagType=20 name=3D"PlaceType"=20 namespaceuri=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"></o:SmartTagT= ype><o:SmartTagType=20 name=3D"PlaceName"=20 namespaceuri=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"></o:SmartTagT= ype><o:SmartTagType=20 name=3D"place"=20 namespaceuri=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"></o:SmartTagT= ype><o:SmartTagType=20 name=3D"PersonName"=20 namespaceuri=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"></o:SmartTagT= ype><!--[if !mso]> <STYLE>st1\:* { BEHAVIOR: url(#default#ieooui) } </STYLE> <![endif]--> <STYLE>@font-face { font-family: Tahoma; } @font-face { font-family: Papyrus; } @page Section1 {size: 595.3pt 841.9pt; margin: 72.0pt 90.0pt 72.0pt = 90.0pt; } P.MsoNormal { FONT-SIZE: 12pt; MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt; FONT-FAMILY: "Times New Roman" } LI.MsoNormal { FONT-SIZE: 12pt; MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt; FONT-FAMILY: "Times New Roman" } DIV.MsoNormal { FONT-SIZE: 12pt; MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt; FONT-FAMILY: "Times New Roman" } A:link { COLOR: blue; TEXT-DECORATION: underline } SPAN.MsoHyperlink { COLOR: blue; TEXT-DECORATION: underline } A:visited { COLOR: purple; TEXT-DECORATION: underline } SPAN.MsoHyperlinkFollowed { COLOR: purple; TEXT-DECORATION: underline } SPAN.EmailStyle17 { COLOR: windowtext; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-style-type: personal } SPAN.EmailStyle18 { COLOR: navy; FONT-FAMILY: Arial; mso-style-type: personal-reply } DIV.Section1 { page: Section1 } </STYLE> </HEAD> <BODY lang=3DEN-US vLink=3Dpurple link=3Dblue> <DIV><FONT face=3DArial color=3D#0000ff size=3D2></FONT> </DIV> <BLOCKQUOTE dir=3Dltr style=3D"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px"> <DIV class=3DOutlookMessageHeader dir=3Dltr align=3Dleft><FONT = face=3DArial=20 size=3D2><SPAN lang=3DEN-NZ=20 style=3D"FONT-SIZE: 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial"><o:p> <BLOCKQUOTE style=3D"MARGIN-TOP: 5pt; MARGIN-BOTTOM: 5pt; = MARGIN-RIGHT: 0cm"> <DIV> <P class=3DMsoNormal><FONT face=3DArial size=3D2><SPAN=20 style=3D"FONT-SIZE: 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial">I like=20 it.</SPAN></FONT><o:p></o:p></P></DIV> <DIV> <P class=3DMsoNormal><FONT face=3D"Times New Roman" size=3D3><SPAN=20 style=3D"FONT-SIZE: 12pt"> <o:p></o:p></SPAN></FONT></P></DIV> <DIV> <P class=3DMsoNormal><FONT face=3DArial size=3D2><SPAN=20 style=3D"FONT-SIZE: 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Arial">It will give PCs = something to do=20 with all those bits and bobs from critters besides turning them over = to=20 alchemists for a big wad of sp. I have been trying to pin down what it is about this idea that bugs me. The first thing is that this idea is similar to features of EQ and use some of the same terminology and structures as are presented on a few of the EQ player resource sites. And this jarrs. But I can probably get over this, particularly if this could be put in more of a DQ style. The next thing is that in DQ the creation of magical items is a mostly lost art that in general is done by shapers. There are a few exceptions: - Investment, Magical Traps, and Potions are all items created by magical ritual or quasi-magical skill that store and release spell effects. - Wicca can make magical amulets. - Illusionists, Necromancers and Binders can make some of their spells permanent (indefinite duration) through use of a ritual. - Binders can make Linking Life Force items. - E&Es can make crystal balls & some every expensive magical dusts. Some of these exceptions are fine, others are problematic to a greater or lesser extent. It was decided long ago that shaping magics and the shaper college would not be player options and that has been a long standing standard for our campaign. There are the exceptions listed above and there have been a few item creation type abilities handed out but they are rare. I think my main objection to this proposal is that it makes the creation of magical items more common and therefore less valuable. If I understand your intention correctly then even 3 MA non-mages can create magical items if they combine the right bits at the right time and have the right set of mundane skills. And this doesn't fit with my view of our campaign world. It seems more suited to a younger and more intrinsically magic world. I'm not sure if I have explained myself well. But hopefully you get the idea. Cheers, Stephen. -- to unsubscribe notify mailto:dq-request@dq.sf.org.nz -- |

Stephen wrote: I think my main objection to this proposal is that it makes the creation of magical items more common and therefore less valuable. JB: This is mostly true. I hope that GMs will give out less complete magic items as loot and more items used in recipes. If I understand your intention correctly then even 3 MA non-mages can create magical items if they combine the right bits at the right time and have the right set of mundane skills. JB: This is correct. If a warrior has collected 5 write-ups over the last 2 years, and has the skills needed (spent the EP), and wants to take the 3 weeks out of training time, and perform the recipe on the event date to make something new for themselves then great. My main exception to this is where we decide that a collage is needed such as creating a recipe that only Wicca can use. These could be Amulets of protection from Undead where you gain one point of protection from Undead drain effects, for example. Also I hope that some of the resulting items from the recipes will be only useful to some skilled people - such as a Thief, or a Baker or a Warrior. This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_0002_01C565FD.291DB070 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Stephen, with respect I find your objections to be lacking in substance. Since I treat MMORPGs like cases of Ebola I have no such prior bias. Anyway what does it matter where an idea comes from? Balrogs are a rip-off from an overly ripped off fantasy novel. DQ seems awash in the buggers, so much that some players casually talk of beating them. Few exceptions? And you missed out herbalist and the magical funk (Like +8 to any stat) they pull. And golems. Water mage potions. Most of the Rune College. It seems to be shaped items that should be the exception and rightly so. It was decided long ago that shaping magics and the shaper college would not be player options and that has been a long standing standard for our campaign. There are the exceptions listed above and there have been a few item creation type abilities handed out but they are rare. It was also stated that shaped items be rare and if powerful not without faults. I see this rule observed in the breach continuously. Shaped, hideously powerful items drip from every character more like Christmas decorations than the rare items of power from a bygone age they should be. A system to introduce rare one-shots and charged items has to be an improvement over the looseness that is standard at the moment. 3 MA 'non mages' can already create alchemist potions, herbal recipies, healer potions, predict the future, locate north and with the help of an adept manufacture a magical trap with "the right set of mundane skills". I'm not sure if I have explained myself well. But hopefully you get the idea. Cheers, Stephen. The idea bugged me too initially. But then I asked myself these questions. 1- Will this add to the number of adventuring possabilities or subtract from them? Answer - It will give a broader range of adventures. Players can organise themselves to go looking for objects instead of Fed-exing for faceless Alchemist #32. Adventures could be based arround helping a group harvest or protect a valuable if wierd crop. Protecting a vinyard of reannual wine with the reward of some of the harvest makes for a better adventure than defend generic village #56. Would I run such adventures? Yes. 2- Will this add to character motivations or subtract from them? Answer - Players, evil, wily things that they are are bound to want some of the gizmos on the recipie list for their characters. This gives the little munchkins something to aim for that isn't just a big bag o cash or your own customised magic item (which appears to be a common reward these days). If a potent recipie says cockatrice blood (a rare and deadly thing in itself) then PCs will want it above and beyond the inherent dangers it poses. 3- Will this improve interest in the game? Answer - Yes. Some players like trading and dickering with one another. This gives them bartering items more interesting than big bags o cash. 4- Will this allow for a greater variety in rewards given to characters? Answer - Yes. It gives the GM a reward option other than a big bag o cash. If the GM doesn't use it, fine. I won't send my jackbooted thugs to make them. It allows for poor folks to hire adventurers since they can trade them knowledge of where some spime grows and a fine crop of mandrakes rather than some improbable big bag o cash. Some may of noted that I have used the phrase 'big bag o cash' a little. The point is that a pseudo-medieval setting ideally should not be awash in the sea of cash most game settings have. Anything that moves away from a money economy and toward a barter one should be tried merely to escape this trap. Nobles should be cash poor and resource rich. A nob looking to employ a party should offer blacksmithing, armour, a fine horse and so on and not money. Merchant Princes in a similar vien should offer rare items from distant lands that their ships/caravans reach. Sages can offer research time or a particular book. And villagers can likewise provide hedge magic ingredients. Each of these NPCs has the capability to offer equivalent rewards while at the same time having very different levels of wealth. Each offers realistic and believable rewards too. William (who still feels that damage is the best thing to give players). ------=_NextPart_000_0002_01C565FD.291DB070 Content-Type: application/ms-tnef; name="winmail.dat" Content-Transfer-Encoding: My initial feelings on this were that it was a bad idea, but on reflection it does not seem to bad a concept. I think that it would be detrimental to the game if this simply became another avenue for people to power up characters in things that they cannot do now. We currently have a situation where after years of drastic inflation in the toughness of the characters and the opponents they face we have levelled off a little and lost some of desperate race to be as tough as possible feel that the guild had a few years back. I think this levelling is a good thing although I accept others may differ on that. I have a definite concern that the addition of this proposal may start another bout of power inflation and for me I like a fantasy game not a superhero's one. I may be wrong on this but it just feels like another way to power up characters and as much as I would like to think it would add to the game as a role-playing and characterisation aid, I suspect it will just be another item fest. However all of this is controllable at the recipe creation level and I don't see any reason for not at least looking at the types of recipes people may come up with. I like the idea. It is perfect for the construction of items appropiate to a character from a charcter development/ roleplaying perspective. Another aspect is that it will give characters that can't train for whatever reason (eg not enough XP) something they can do - I'll go find those mushrooms I need for the potion that causes me to have visions. This idea is definitely worth consideration. Scott Whitaker -- to unsubscribe notify mailto:dq-request@dq.sf.org.nz -- |

Viola's Lost Followers. I have lost some... followers. I want them back alive. There are two of them. The back alive part is absolutly neccessary so I don't want any loose cannons or for that matter people who attack first and ask questions later. Also, those who burden theselves with concepts like 'good' and 'evil' need not apply either. Negotiation skills with all manner of entities a must as is the ability to think and honour a contract. GM Ben Tabener, Wednesday nights, Venue to be decided. Level Medium (or character based). Viola -- to unsubscribe notify mailto:dq-pub-request@dq.sf.org.nz -- |
