> Back to "what do we want" ? Unfortunatly I cannot answer this. I can certainly let you know what I want though. > I'd have no issue with reducing the average flying speed or > upping the > FT costs (or at least confirming those FT costs) -- but would > prefer not > to do this unless / until we have a clear idea of the issue > being addressed. I think the world becomes a smaller place with everyone able to flit about on wings. As a result there is no sence of scale to the world. The Western Kingdom is a massive place, as large as any of the major European nations if not larger, and yet you can fly over it with one high ranked spell or two average ranked ones in less than a day. I think this provides a distraction from the game world. Flying at 40-50 miles an hour is a speed that is more of a modern feel so it pulls people from 13th-16th century thinking back to 22st century mindsets which hinders people ability to immerse in the game. This is a hard reasoning to verbalise, particularly at this time in the morning, so I hope it conveys a little of my concern. > If we did reduce flying speeds -- and they became as you said "more > like the speed of birds", then I'd also want us to do away with the > silly catapulting people through the sky they currently do > and integrate them properly with combat etc... :-) I am certainly keen to try :-) Currently if people fly in combat in my games I use a 3 pulse system. One Pulse to take off, one to loop and one to try and land somewhere else on the battlefield. Sloppy landings get a scatter dice involved. That's the rule I remember...essentially "Over training", not over ranking. Allowng a PC to train a bit more wth a one month grace period to come up with the Ep. Interesting that Errol found a six month Rank 0 rule -- I didn't recal that one -- though there seems to be no hard and fast rule regarding the contiguousness of training, just that it needs to be paid for before the Rank is gained. There's no change record in the front the current rules for the removal of over training / grace period -- perhaps an oversight during one of the re-writes of ranking... or its removal may pre-date the change record. For what little it's worth I don't recall its removal being discussed. - Martin -- Martin Dickson ph: +64 9 3730400 x5115 User Experience Engineer fax: +64 9 3730401 Strategy, Research & Architecture email: martin.dickson@peace.com Peace Software http://www.peace.com -- to unsubscribe notify mailto:dq-request@dq.sf.org.nz -- |

It is implied that time spent gaining a rank must be done consecutively. With ranking times up to 20 weeks, even a season off in our schedule is quite a squeeze. I know several people who were under the understanding that your training for a rank must be completed within 6 months of starting. Having a extra day for each break seems reasonable, if slightly tedious. Or is some other way of stopping people spreading ranking over years preferred? Cheers Errol -----Original Message----- From: Jonathan Bean [mailto:jonathan@tme.co.nz] Sent: Tuesday, 12 July 2005 08:35 To: dq@dq.sf.org.nz Subject: Re: [dq] Over ranking Thanks for the digging Andrew - more ranks in spy than me :-) I remembered incorrectly which is why I guess I was checking it - I think the part I was remembering was the section: A player may declare that his character is beginning to spend the necessary time to improve in an ability or vocation before he gains the necessary Experience Points. If the character does not have the correct amount of EP by the time he has completed the first requirement, he has one month to gain that amount. If the character gains the necessary EP within the one month time limit, he must spend an extra day in study and/or practice to gain Rank. So clearly this rule can only be used by male players.... Decision made, I will abandoning my solitary live arrangements and going back to the flatting / housemates lifestyle. The financial incentives alone are just too much to ignore. In all probability, I will joining Lisa, Gordon and Kevin at Endeavour St. and hopefully by the end of the month. (OMG) Anyway I have two (immediate) requests for the extended group here. 1) I need boxes, mainly for books, so not too large (Biscuit boxes have proven to be sturdy enough and about the right size) 2) I'm probably going to need to find a home for my lounge suite (sob, sob) and would be happy to lend my Washing machine, dryer, microwave and fridge if there are any who NEED them. Also it is probable, though not certain, that my old abode in Oakley Ave would be available to be rented. I can vouch for both the previous tenant and the landlord :) TTFN, Struan. -- to unsubscribe notify mailto:dq-request@dq.sf.org.nz -- |

If, upon gaining a new Rank, the troubadour wishes to forego gaining a new ability, they may specialise in one of the abilities that they already possess. That ability then operates at (troubadour’s Rank + 1), maximum 10." In order to specialise you have to pick an ability you already have. It is not possible to specialise at Rank 0 -- you don't have any existing abilities upon gaining the new Rank (Rank 0). So, 3 abilities at Rk 0 practised at Rank 0. At Rank 1 you may choose to specialise in one of your Rk 0 abilities, rather than gain an additional ability. The specialised ability will then be practiced at Rk 1 + 1 = effective Rk 2. The other two Rk 0 abilities will be practiced at Rk 1. When Rk 2 is gained and the PC specialises again the special ability will be at Rk 2 + 2 = effective 4. At Rk 5 + 5 = effective 10 the ability tops out. Just for clarity: Even if we allow subskills at Rk 7 or lower there is no reason to believe that this automatically makes it possible to buy the same ability again in order to specialise. We may _choose_ to allow this, but the current specialisation rule is limited to when the PC gains a new rank -- which isn't what is happening why they just buy a new sub-skill. Statement of interest - I have characters...they rank.... Personally I cannot think of a benefit to allowing people to split their ranking. Getting Rank 10 in a weapon is a difficult struggle as it should be. You have you really want it. Time is the only constraint in the the game that is fairly allocated to eveyone and makes a damn fine restriction to people wanting to get to the high ranks in things. Not everything should be cheap and easy to attain. The only people who would really *require* this rule for the betterment of the game are those with only one character as the time constraint stops them roleplaying entirely. If the bulk of the guild only played a single character then the rule would be a great one to change, but they don't. Most of us have several characters and rotate them as appropriate, those that only have the one character are either new players or very rare. Of those people I know with a single character they do not seem to struggle with time that much and still have high ranks in things. Ergo, no issue. There are a number of old, err, veteran players in the guild who commonly play only a single character. We may have had others but they are mostly or completely retired. This seems to me to insure that the keen people are directly encouraged to not play.... as in take time (years) out to rank stuff. So we have a game where the thing to do for my characters story line is not play. On the other hand maybe is an odd form of load balancing? Surely the veteran players with only one character, achieve their ranking break to GM a session. > Rare... cool. :-) I can only think of a handful of you, that's pretty rare :0) > Disagree from personal experience. Mortimer has been less > affected than > if he seriously used weapons, but rituals have the same problem at > higher ranks. But is the rituals issue one of being unable to play because of ranking or a 'that's a lot of time for one rank' issue. Dramus has not really ranked his rituals much either due to the time it takes to do so, and I have other character so not playing is not always a reasons for not ranking rituals. In general taking a session off is something we all do even with a single character and there are very few things that take more than a session to rank. Remembering that if an adventure gives you 7 weeks training time a single session off gets you any rank. > Maybe not a big issue, but there is one. Over the years, the EP rewards have increased, the starting character has become tougher, the items handed out have become looser. Basically the only thing that has not been suffering from inflation is time. I don't see that speeding up this inflation as a good thing. There are a number of options available for people who only have a single character (a second character, not ranking that thing quite so quickly or as Sally suggested taking a session off to GM :-) ). All of these are a personal choice. Changing the rules for a small group in a way that I think would be detrimental to the game as a whole is not a good thing. I'd like to enshrine current practise (within reason). At the moment, do people ranking rituals or weapons sometimes spend some of the time, and complete the next rank after the next adventure? I think that (rules to the contrary), this does happen, and people often have a six month time limit in mind, or try to complete the rank in a continuous period, excluding adventures. This seems reasonably harmless, and allows those people who enjoy (mainly) one character to roleplay someone with weapons and/or rituals. Splitting ranking by going out on adventure is frequently a *necessary* part of the game. For those PCs ranking rituals up to a good rank, it is frequently impossible to rank in a way that fits the game calendar. Fortunately --perhaps its all that flying? -- adventures are often completed in 4 weeks or less, especially at higher levels (with all that complicated fighting and crucial interation with NPC) so the interruption is not long, especially when compared with time take to rank the ritual. Indeed SF has broken most of his higher ranks for purification this way & GMs at the time had no problem with that. Let's remember that the quarterly sessions are --above ALL else-- a gaming convention that is player-driven & not character-driven; we should reasonably avoid rules complications that attack, destablise, or unnecessarily complicate this gaming convention. At the moment, do people ranking rituals or weapons sometimes spend some of the time, and complete the next rank after the next adventure? I think that (rules to the contrary), this does happen, and people often have a six month time limit in mind, or try to complete the rank in a continuous period, excluding adventures. This seems reasonably harmless, and allows those people who enjoy (mainly) one character to roleplay someone with weapons and/or rituals. a year and a day seems traditional. :-D 6 months may be short. A Rank 20 ritual or Rank 10 weapon requires 20 weeks of ranking. 6 months allows only 6 weeks to be taken for the (interupting) adventure. Sure some people do it in only a few day... Or have i misunderstood what the '6 months' refers to? Not Jono or Andrew but... Jono was asking where a missing rule was / when was it removed. The rule allows training before EP is available with a requirement that the EP be provided within one month of the end of training, and that one extra day be spent. Andrew supplied the text from DQ2. There is no record of this rule being dropped intentionally. It appears to have been inadvertently dropped from the current rules. This lead into a (mostly unrelated) discussion of the rule that states that the 8 weeks of training for a Rank 0 skill may be split over 6 months, and the suggestion / assertion from various posters that training normally has a requirement of contiguous time. Hence my most recent question: could someone please point me to the rule requiring contiguous time in training. The rule I was told many years ago and have always played is that you can spend the time on one rank in a skill/spell/ritual/weapon (can do multiple things but only one rank in each) and then spend the xp within 6 months to complete the ranking and get to use the new rank. I have also rarely been short a day or two of time, spent the xp, but not used the new rank until I have been able to complete the ranking time. And rarely (at low level) have been given xp during adventure to do some ranking mid-adventure that was required for the adventure or just because we had to wait a while for something. I don't think I have ever split my time and spent some of the ranking time in one set and then the rest in the next set. Not because I thought it was wrong or against the rules, just because it got trickier to keep track of. :-) My feeling is that if you have to look at more than two sets of ranking to see the whole picture or a GM needs more than 10 minutes and a calculator to check your ranking then you can't do it.
