My understanding is that these places are still very north, about 2000
miles north of destiny on the coast, as it starts to loop back to the
east again. However, we are trying to clarify the maps at the moment, so
if people think it should be somewhere in particular, now is the time to
say so.

Subject[dq] Air Collage Weather table
FromJonathan Bean
DateThu, 28 Jul 2005 09:08:22 +1200
Hi all,

In the current set of Rules 2004, the Weather table has changed from what I
understood that we as GMs voted into play with the Air Collage ver 2.0

The changes I have noted are:
The degree section has changed from what I understood was voted in to the
old version. In the old version the maximum amount of rainfall per hour is
160 Inch/Hour.

We as GMs changed the table to reflect that we did not wish an old effect of
(at rank 15)
Duration 120 hours X 160 inch of rainfall X radius of 15 miles.

So is this a mistake or did this change at a GOD meeting sometime?

I'm not sure about what was voted in, but Jono is right - the numbers in
this table are broken.

"Average Rain" at 10 inches (250mm) an hour. You get flood warnings
(~degree 10-11) at more than 100mm overnight.

No matter how or when this was or was not changed, if we want to use the
numbers in this table (the descriptions seem fine to me), we need to
change them first.

Andrew

Wicca can alter rainfall with their control weather ritual, not sure about
Air
mages but I assume their Control Weather can too.
And yes it is scary. A few years ago I had a Wicca cover a mountain with a
couple of yards of snow in spring/summer for their convenience, when it
melted
it caused flooding in the local area destroying crops, livestock, some
immediate
loss of life, then there were the longer term effects.
Fortuantely for the locals it was accidental, a malicious Wicca would summon
the heaviest rainfall they could to accompany the snow melt and cause even
more
devastation.
The best part of this is that with a bit of advance planning you can cause
damage
100 miles away a day after you were there, like spring floods in Australia -
they can have flooding when they never even saw the rain that caused it.

This is all just taking the weather gauge at it's descriptive levels.
As far as fixing the numbers... halve them and change the scale to inches
per
day?

Warning of the day - don't mess with Wicca if you own any land. Curse
Crops/Livestock,
Control Weather for alternating weeks of baking hot arid weather and
flooding.

And if you're marching an Army anywhere take your own Wicca to ensure the
weather
stays on your side.

Surely not. What does a "mm" mean, perhaps miles -- by analogy to pp and SS
(pages & Saints)? I
think that the measures are *approximately* inches per day or, because of a
systematic error,
precisely inches per 1 day & 84 minutes.

However your point still stands; the figures are horrifying if interpreted
that way.

The table should be mm/hour, and even then, "degree" 8+ is iffy. My advice
is to note that the weather control ritual never does worse weather than
could occur naturally, and then go with the descriptions & ignore the actual
numbers in the table. Or we could change the units.

10 inches/hour is a fire hose. Even 10mm/hour is not average rain. Would the
numbers be useful if they were accurate? Not for me.

Andrew

hi there,

Can anyone alter amount of rain falling on the Degree Table in the Air
college ? I would scared of anyone who can cause or increase rainfall using
that chart...read on to find out why...

I was looking through these tables (18.9, Page 67), for reference purposes,
and I noticed that either Alusia is wetter than I thought, or there has been
a reporting error in the Degree table (copied below, comma delineated for
those with spreadsheet access):

Degree, Cloud, Precipitation
 , ,(Inches / Hour)
0, Clear, Dry; high fire danger, 0
1, Clear, Dry; fires easy to start, 0
2, Clear, Comfortable, 0
3, Sparse, Humid; uncomfortable in high temperature, 1
4, Light, Damp, 2
5, Cloudy, Drizzle; fog in cold conditions, 3
6, Overcast, Showers, 4
7, Heavy Cloud, Light rain; leaves move; fires difficult to start, 5
8, Dark Cloud, Average rain, 10
9, Low black cloud, Heavy rain; small branches move; small fires doused, 20
10 *, Oppressive, Torrential rain; river rise; large fires doused, 40
11 **, Oppressive, Flood warning; rivers burst their banks, 80
12+***, Oppressive, Flash floods, 160

Were these meant to be in mm/hour?

***Reasons for my astonishment***
The NZ Met Service issues a heavy rain warning if there is likely to be more
than 50 mm in 24 hours.

Fiordland is one of the wettest places on earth, receiving 21 feet, or 252
inches of rain in a year. That is about 90 minutes of rain at Degree 12, 3
hours at Degee 11, 13 hours at Degree 10 etc.

By this logic, Fiordland must never experience Opressive rain, so as long as
your campfires are large, it will not be rained out. And even low black
clouds would be rare.

I tell you, I am going to pay more attention to the predict weather talent
in future...

Ian

If unable to run away, at the end of this the water would be almost 500m
deep, and the grand total is nearly 900 cubic kilometres.

You'd have to cast the ritual three times to fill up Lake Victoria.

We have an audit system of sorts, so I think we should go back to the last
version that was considered and voted on.

If at that point we find that we did vote in a change to a table looking
like the one in the rule book, then people could then say if it is broken,
and attempt to fix it.

Initially you would take this up with your GM out of game ( and
possibly attempt to keep it objective :) )

If this proves to be not practical then you would talk to someone on
the Grievance tribunal (see
http://www.dragonquest.org.nz/dqwiki/index.php/Grievance_Tribunal )

Subject[dq] Alusian Realm details request
FromChris Caulfield
DateThu, 28 Jul 2005 15:41:14 +1200 (NZST)
Defining the realms / regions / areas on Alusia

We (the campaign committe, GM who use Alusia and players with vested
interests in Alusia) are looking to get more detailed information on the
various realms on Alusia in order to enable better background details,
ease of use for GM¡¦s other than the GM who ¡¥owns¡¦ the area (the GM
listed in the Gazetteer) and more consistent information.

The data desired is that which makes a place have some character or
¡¥soul¡¦ when the PC¡¦s go through rather than just another realm / place
/ town they pass through on route to adventure elsewhere.

We¡¦d like the GM¡¦s who play on Alusia to please complete the form on the
last page and once done please place the information in the DQ Wiki
(http://www.dragonquest.org.nz/dqwiki/index.php/Main_Page) site and place
the data there in the appropriate realm.
There¡¦s no time limit on this ¡V it is merely a request for those GM¡¦s
interested in ¡¥fleshing out¡¦ their world to do so, thereby bettering the
game we all play for everyone.

Please also note that the information asked for below is not an exhaustive
one but is merely meant to give those replying some ¡¥structure¡¦ for
their realms and standardisation of information types. Also feel free to
reformat the details below for your own use.

PLEASE Don't reply to me, simply either submit the details of the Alusian
realms you set your DQ games in or not - Its your choice ;)

Cheers
Chris
