Game date is important too, as status will tend to neutral over time.
Faction should make clear the location, or it may be worth a separate column
to make it easier for a GM to scan a PC's record for entries of interest to
the current session.

I think a A4 sheet per character should do OK. If a PCs records go to more
than two sides, then the balances from the oldest sheets can be transferred
to the latest one. It will just take one player to wave their sheet under
the GM's nose on the final night to trigger a quick update of everyone's
(I'm imagining the players scribbling and the GM signing).

GMs need guidelines for points, costs etc of course - should fit on around
half a page I would think.


This could be extended to a ranking for the Guild with major
factions/polities, which tends to happen in a less structured way currently
in any case, so possibly not worth the bother.

Two adventures are sitting in the guild pub having a drink after a hard won
successful adventure.

PC no#1:	You've died how many times???

PC no#2:	You know what Herbert; you haven't lived until you've died a
bit.  The first time I died it took the party 6 days to get me back.  In
that time I had build a nice little mud hut behind the pearly gates and got
my self well settled in.  since then I've been back 8 times over the years
the last time I was contemplating leaving my favorite dragon slaying sword
at my hut so I can do my favorite activity when I'm visiting - in fact
adventuring behind the pearly gates is quite a lot of fun, maybe next time
I'll stay.

PC no#1:	You know your right; I have always wondered what death would
be like - it's the one big adventure I haven't dared go on.  Death was a big
deal where I'm from and I was bought up proper, also no one ever resurrects
peasants like my family was.  

PC no#2:	 With the guild contract putting an emphasis on looking
after us if we die, death is quite safe really. At the very least you should
die once so you don't have to hide your face around here.

My point?  I don't think PC's being cavalier about death is abhorrent.  If
we imagine a world in which resurrection is almost a certainty, I think it
is not at all unreasonable for PC's to treat death lightly.  I think the
sanctity of life changes quite a lot in such a world - at least in the world
views of some PC's anyway.

I am not that experienced as a GM in DQ but...

from what I could tell in the last game I ran I
managed to intimidate the party with some of the
monsters not because the PCs couldn't handle them but
more from the situation... one of the situations was
the Giant Lizard party member was in front of the
group travelling through a narrow tunnel system where
they were about to face hobbit sized critters whom had
ok ranks of mil sci and used it to good effect, the
whole situation didn't boil down to a fight which was
my intent but rather the players managed to quickly
negotiate a way to speak to the entity in charge of
the area and eventually managed to negotiate a trade
agreement with them for the party employer, I could of
forced the encounter in fact I did every thing short
of declaring a charge with the bad guys in fact the
party was only 6 pulses away from trying to deal with
the combat but fast thinking saved them a bad fight...
Usually combat is an easy way out but as GM's we still
have to sometimes be arbitrary if nothing more than
sometimes saying yes there is going to be a fight... I
know from experience some of the most annoying RP
experiences I have had are when the GM presents
situations where the only way to solve the problem is
to kill everyone in the room who isn't a PC (that said
that sometimes has its place) even thou the PC's have
a means to communicate with the creature or
magics/uberness that allows a non-combat solution
etc... 

Also what a few people have realised from the other
games I run that not everyone is as tough as they make
out... a great defensive technique is for the world to
see you as a great warrior even if you can't lift that
sword on your hip...

Fixed some errors and took into account comments.

 

Faction

In the campaign characters have different relationships with organisations,
groups, and individuals.

Here is a simple system for keeping track of this between differently GM'ed
games.

 

Value  Type                Effect

100      Allied               Will assist the person as best they can.

80        Warmly            Will work with the person.

50        Friendly            Will help at no cost.

0          Neutral             Will help at small cost.

-50       Unfriendly         Will not help them.

-80       Hostile              Will work against them.

-100     Enemy              Will attack, if they can.

 

We could enter costs for services like:

Type  

Needed            Effect

Allied:   Resurrections will cost you 20 points

                        Help get off major crime 15 points

                        Get major inside information 15 points

Warmly:           A night at the inn for 7 people costs 5 points.

                        Help get off serious crime 10 points

                        Get serious inside information 5 points

Friendly:           A bit of knowledge about a person 5 points

                        Help get off minor crime 5 points

                        Get minor inside information 5 points

 

The Player has 110 pts with The Kings Mages, from playing in Martins game.
Comes on a Jono game and says I am an ally with them I can get Sid and Joe
(dead fellow adventurer) resurrected.

 

He then lowers his faction by 20 pits to 90 pts from 110 pts. He is only now
Warmly with them as he's got 90pts so cant buy the second resurrection for
another 20 pts without doing something or promising to do something on the
list below to raise his faction.

 

As a general guide GMs can give players a Faction Chit. To work out the
value of the modifier on the chit please pick something appropriate from
below.

 

+20      Succeeded on a quest for them

+20      recover some knowledge for them

+15      Recovered an item

+15      Defended them in court

+10      Recovered an person

+10      Defended them in person

+05      Took on a job and only just succeeded.

-05       Took on a job and failed

-10       Attached a member/person in group/origination

-15       Killed a member/person in group/origination

-50       Killed more than three member/person in group/origination

For those that haven't read them, the Steven Brust Jhereg books involve death and resurrection of
an "adventurer" and has a society where resurrection is a normal part of life if you are important
enough.
Assassination where the target is left in a resurrectable state (and is likely to be found in
time) is considered an object lesson in manners.  When threats haven't worked and breaking their
kneecaps just isn't enough...

btw Scuttlebut has it that the Jhereg world/magic system was inspired by a DQ campaign.
