At the moment under the faction system I was talking of; a Character with a
high faction could go to a group and attempt to get them to do something,
which would as the GM see's fit lower their faction number by a expected
amount on the table. - In other words attempt to spend their faction.
Martin seeded to be saying - in your previous post that he was concerned
that the system would allow a player to control (in a TORG way) the story
line. I was simply pointing out this can be completely stopped.

Usable in all games = Good
(Like the expectation of loot)
Simple to use = Good
One A4 sheet for one character = Good
Record of relationships = Good
(Added as new ones interacted with from maybe a master GM list)
A scaled measurement system = Good (Numbers or
words)
Aimed at NPC's of note, or Organizations = Good (Not the single
bar keeper)
Characters actively using it = Good (Not
to create NPCs but interact with them)
Character expectations = Good

Not sure I understand -- PCs can currently actively seek out the "Healers of
Seagate" or whoever and ask for a ressurection... you'd want to prevent
this?
My concern is more that the numeric structure looks like a pricelist -- and
may set an expectation that these "services" are available on-demand... and
expenditure of the appropriate points.
I also like the number feel to it as I hope players will act on the base
instinct of consumerisum and wish to get more points with a group...
Whereas I find the idea of interchangeable points for resurrection and
getting off a criminal charge to be undesirable in the extreme.
OK.. we seem to be going round and round on this; summary of position:
Factions (general idea) = good. (And currently / informally used)
Favours = good (And currently used by some GMs)
Numeric system = bad
Cheers,
Martin

How will characters move between these states or points in a multi GM game.
As I see it now these are all differnet states of a relationship - not a
scale.

Subject: Re: [dq] NPC and factions
I also have problems with the numerical nature of this proposition. It seems
to me that relationships and "favours" are qualitative, not quantitative,
and are really context-dependant. In short, you want a sentence, not a
number.
How do you put all these cases on a single scale:
* PC and NPC are good friends. Either will do the other lots of
favours.
* PC and NPC are friendly. PC owes NPC a favour.
* PC and NPC are friendly. NPC owes PC a favour.
* PC and NPC are enemies. PC owes NPC a favour.
* NPC is helpful but has little resources - e.g. peasant village
* NPC is indifferent, but believes in largesse - might do big favours
on a whim, with or without vicious hooks.
* NPC is hostile, but will do stuff for cash or to hurt other enemies.
These need at least three different scales - friendliness, indebtedness,
power. And I'd argue that these shouldn't be numbers either.
Regards
Andrew

Simple to use = Good
One A4 sheet for one character = Good
Record of relationships = Good
(Added as new ones interacted with from maybe a master GM list)
A scaled measurement system = Good (Numbers or
words)
Aimed at NPC's of note, or Organizations = Good (Not the single
bar keeper)
Characters actively using it = Good (Not
to create NPCs but interact with them)
Character expectations = Good
Any number of 'good' attributes are of little use if most GMs won't accept,
distribute or use the resulting points/description because they don't think
that this gives enough information.
Likewise a detailed multi-axis system applied to many factions would be too
unwieldy for many to be bothered with.
There may or may not be a balance (or different approach) that is accepted
by most people.
I do like the overall concept, it helps hold the campaign together.
Cheers
Errol

ok, i never invisaged favours as pure currency, where 5 favours from different factions could be traded for 3 favours from others.
I did not even see a bartering system. "I am owed a small favour from Baron X, so i will trade you that for an introduction to Count Y."
As i see things, PC1 gets a major favour from NPCa, a moderate from NPCb and three minors from NPCc,NPCd and NPCe.
I do not see them summing, or adding into A whopper favour that may be cashed in with NPCf.
maybe i am just nieve, but i would prefer favours to stay within factions, and rarely be traded outside of that faction.
Apart from the feel, it turns a social obligation into just another form of currency. yuk.
