Quoting Mandos Mitchinson <MandosM@adhb.govt.nz>: > I was always under the impression that Artisan skills did not require a > Masterwork to advance above 8. However I cannot find any rule that > supports that. That is because the rule for masterworks was introduced to slow pcs from picking up resurrection, which happens at rank 8. And, I'm guessing, but I would say that the DMs at the time decided that they needed to apply the rules on all of the professional skills, because you would be somehow breaking some kind of pattern. For what that's worth. Artisan skills came along after that rule was created, and the idea with artisan skills was that they represented the kind of skill that people routinely based their livelihoods upon. The theory being that players would take these things simply for role playing purposes, rather than for some actual game return on experience expenditure. By and large, there is limited return on artisan expenditure expenditure, although a few of them have some distinct affect. > > Are they required? Or are Artisan skills like Adventuring skills and > have an excemption? Well, because the impact on the game is so minor, there is no need to produce masterworks, so no particular need for it. If players want to produce special works, then there is no reason to deny them this. Historically, a member of a craft would produce at least 2 works, and possibly 3. The first work is there apprentice piece, which was often something that was useless, but showed their maker's skills. These were often miniatures of things that might more commonly made by that craft. A cutler's apprentice might create a very small penknife, for example. If this is of sufficient quality, then the apprentice becomes a journeyman, such a person being capable of the every day tasks associated with that craft. Journeymen were expected to produce a work at the end of the year after they were no longer accounted an apprentice, although in practice it was often longer, and should this work be acceptable, they become a member of their craft in good standing. Masterworks are the area of those senior practitioners of the craft, and they would be expensive, time consuming and they were supposed to improve the understanding of the craft...A new (or rediscovered) technique, say. Players should feel free to exercise their imagination about these things. If they want to develop such things, then I imagine that could be a great deal of fun. But, I don't think there's a rule on it. Jim. -- to unsubscribe notify mailto:dq-request@dq.sf.org.nz --

Seems reasonable. I'll re-word into something vague that doesn't sound like
we accidentally missed out a list of points.
Cheers

What is missing at the end of swimming is any agreement on what combat
abilities should be gained at what ranks. Applying the ride/fly benefits at
ranks 3/5/7 wasn't agreed on, but people thought there should be something -
hence the placeholder.
I interpret this as "at lower ranks, a swimmer is uncertain about their
combat abilities, and as they get better, they grow more certain that
fighting underwater is really hard", but am not suggesting this as a
rule/text change.
Merry Xmas

According to The Seagate Times, the Luna Empire is going to be celebrating their Emperors birthday with games. Some sort of competition in which we, the Guild, are invited to enter up to three teams. Does anyone happen to know what sort of games, they play there.? The information given in the Seagate Times hints that maybe they play things a little rougher than tiddley winks. Anyone got any more information, on what they are up to? Or can some one here point me at who or where to ask? Thorn -- to unsubscribe notify mailto:dq-pub-request@dq.sf.org.nz --
