Suprisingly little about Namer magic in there I notice, even for things that the Engalton2000 presumably had (e.g. over 30 GK spells) ... I like Ian's idea of a logarithmic scale ... like earthquakes & noise --- or haven't you seen Engalton "explaining at foreigners"? -- to unsubscribe notify mailto:dq-request@dq.sf.org.nz -- |

Its nice to see the sharing by GMs of the things they find work for them. I am following these posts with interest, I already use some of the same methods as Mandos in planing for adventures. Although with the situation/PC driven games I find that 9-10 week session planing in advance doesn't work and for these I plan a time line for the NPCs or situation, then keep track of when both the Party and the NPCs are on this time line. I then try to adjust plot pace accordingly with how much of the session and plot is left. Like Jono I have a file of generic Mobs, I also keep a page of details on major or NPCs likely to be reencountered in the future, to help keep them and their knowlegde consitant from one adventure to the next. I find doing addition and subtraction in my head easy, so I number and table my mob, and keep track of actual damage, ft used etc. I don't mind where players seat themselves, although I do like for the more active players, party spokes person / leader to be positioned directly head of me. Then I don't get a crick in my neck dealing with them, and am not constantly turning away from the player on the oposite side of the room. This also tends to put the less active, quieter players closer to me, and I can watch them most of the time with my periferal vision. I find maps useful tools, geographic maps, maps of towns and villages, floor plans of buildings. These can be as detailed as down to the position of tables and chairs on a floor plan, or as vague as to only show major roads the position of the maket, the church, and the Inn in a town or village map, depending on the intended use. While I am drawing these maps, I think about why the river runs as it does or what the Inn is built of. Then during game I find it easier to describe terrain, or answer players questions about things like climbing on to the Inn roof, even to calculate how long before the watch arrives in force. I have a clear picture of whats where and the distances involved etc. Its part of knowing your world well which is perhaps more important to GMing than knowing the rules. The world is always there the rules only come into play when something is contested or in combat. A map can be an easy way to remind yourself of details you may have planned several months before when you intially writing the adventure. Maps help to save time in game as the players can see where things are. The a Picture is worth a thousand words thing. The Major theame that seems to be coming though in these {GM} threads is organization, to run an adventure, with smooth, fast, intence, balance combats, and so on you need to be organized. The session plans, Mind maps, NPC Mobs, NPC generators and tables are all tools that help organize and streamline, either the creation prosess or work load in running a game.
