Subject[dq] DQ: Carzala Maps
FromJonathan Bean - TME
DateTue, 18 Jul 2006 09:07:16 +1200
Hi all,

In line with the discussions on the list I have re-edited the Carzala maps.

I have lowered the cropland area (to approx 80k) so that in years to come
GMs don't go - but you need 300,000 people to farm this area. I have also
created three versions of the map all A4 in size.

  http://www.dragonquest.org.nz/dqwiki/index.php/Carzala#Carzala_Maps

They all come in full colour and at 80dpi, 150dpi and 300dpi.
The image files range in size from 500k, 1.5 MB and 4.5 MB.

I can also if people wish;
Remove 'groups' from the map, such as all villages, trails, streams/rivers,
town names, new plains, some new hills etc.
I can also change the transparency of 'groups' also, so we can make the
rivers, or trails or villages more transparent so less noticeable on the
map.
We can also if people really want turn out a B&W version.
All of the things we can do I don't care for so someone will have to ask if
they want me to put more effort in on this front.

Also the names on the map are boring and bland for the most part, aimed at
the middle ground. If people want better names please provide me with a list
and the area you wish them to be placed in.

Thanks in advance.

Kind regards,

Can we ensure that we still have the old map available on-line in a
print-quality format? While the villages are useful for games inside
central Carzala, the old map is easier to use for more general birds-eye
views and planning.

Hi Jono,

The new maps look excellent.

The reduced cropland adds considerable texture to Carzala and visually
illustrates rougher (and probably more dangerous) areas creating obvious
explanation for choices such as where the roads run.

Well done!

Its not really printable and reusable by GMs. The new map is good for
some purposes, and the old map good for others. I'd like both to be
available. If we could have an A4 150DPS image, or similar, that would
be great.

Alternatively, a copy of the new map, without the villages and minor
trails - that way we can have the textured terrain that Martin has
already complemented you on, but still a summary view.

Yes, if you want a good colour A4 copy without the village names, blue dots,
or trails, its easy to do.

Also do you want the map with 93% of the colour taken out of the; village
names, blue dots, or trails.

The point of this is the villages, dots, trails etc turn ghostly and good
for planning (they dont get in the way) but you can only just see them,
which I find useful.

I will put one out tomorrow night as asked (GMing tonight).

Online their is a PDF version of the "Frontiers of Alusia" booklet and map.
You can get to it from the link on my page on the wiki.
http://www.dragonquest.org.nz/dqwiki/index.php/Jono_Bean#Carzala_Maps.

But one of my aims it to provide updated maps (in all scales), to fit with
our campaign.

I believe Jono's resolved copyright issues with the owner - can you put
it on the Wiki? Seems like a useful resource.

I have (somewhere, ..., found it) a hi-res ( about 150 DPI, 5k x 3.3k
pixels) scan of the entireity(sic) of the "Frontiers of Alusia" map.
Runs to a 2.5M(ish) JPEG.

TTFN, Struan.

No I have not resolved any copyright issues, regarding the
"Frontiers of Alusia" map. I have only put a link up to
another persons site who offers a PDF (probably without
copyright permission) from there online site.

I will check but the maps of Carzala I have put up on the wiki
which is based on the maps from the orginal works by the authours
of the Frontiers of Alusia map should now by copyright to us (me),
since they now have changed by more than 85% from the original source.

Andrew, from memory it was Mandos who got permission from WOC for the
non-commercial reuse of old SPI DQ materials. The FoA map and guide would
presumably fall under this (regardless of who scanned them).

Cheers,
Martin
