Karen,
if you want a portal to another plane near the guild do the following.

State
"A new tree appeared in the Seagate commons yesterday which was unusual as
no beans had been thrown that way for days. On investigation it was deemed
to be magical in nature, possibly due to the corruscading lights flashing
between branches or its blue and purple metallic like leaves but either way
a namer from the guild then divinated it and found it to be a portal tree to
the KARENLAND. Brave and hearty adventurers are called to pass through and
see whats there (standard guild rates apply). please bring back
information, notes and trade goods where applicable. If no adventurers
apply the guild will send some 'explorers' through and a report will be
expected back in 3-6 months time.

IMHO the easy way of portal creation to a new GM's world
Cheers
Chris

If you are going to the trouble of making up a new plane, make up a new method
of interaction for people to move off or on it.

The only reason you might choose not to DM high level parties is that these
characters have been around the longest, and the consequences of killing off
such a character permanently is going to be reasonably profound in the real
world.

Player characters have much higher permanent mortality rates when they are low
level than when they are high level for this reason.

The real reason to avoid DMing high level games is not because of some
mysterious complexity of game play at that level. It is because the players of
these characters will waste no time in letting you know how upset they are that
their character is permanently dead, or even simply reduced in power in some
way.

My advice is that, if you do want to DM high level games, make sure that your
phone number is unlisted.

Jim.

SubjectRe: [dq] newbie Dm and new planes
FromStephen Martin

If you wish to tap into existing planar travel mechanisms:

* The slow portal to Bergelfen is a path through some mists. Travellers occasionally report
seeing other things off the path. One group reported walking off the path and using a special
item/ability to follow new paths to another plane. Mostly people that wander into the mists never
return.
There is a philosopher/mechanician with an item he'd like tested, he'll pay well.. if you return.

* The Elven portals used to connect different parts of Alusia and even some other worlds on our
plane. Most of them don't work, but some are starting to show signs of activity, but they're a
bit erratic. Experimentation with powerful mana sources and the portals could have any sort of
effect.

* What happens when a Rune Mage backfires his rune portal and it works anyway, but not to where it
was expected to...

* There is a large Dark Sphere in a section of the sewers beneath old Seagate. At midnight it
changes into a portal to another plane. The plane it goes to at midnight is a very nasty place
that has a strong guild warning about avoiding it.
Nobody has spent the time checking yet, but it may turn into a portal to other places at midday,
dawn, or dusk. Just don't get your timing wrong going through it.

* From time to time the guild has acquired the ability to make or have made permanent portals.
The vegetable cellars below the guild kitchens happen to be a place that is condusive to planar
travel and contain a number of permanent and semi-permanent portals.

* The guild vaults are full of artifacts which guild parties have bought back and do not want or
are too dangerous to be allowed out. Some of the artifacts are there because they seem like they
might do something interesting someday...

Generally when creating a new plane, it is safer to create something that is similar to alusia in
terms of technology and magic. Wierd magics and powerful technologies call to adventurers who
make it their mission to come back with something new, different, and a pain to writeup.
It helps to have some defining difference between your plane and alusia to make it more memorable
and to remind the characters that they're not in Kansas any more, but be careful what that
something is. Consider how it will be abused by scheming manipulative players.

Cheers, Stephen.

You need that fixed or has it been dealt to? If it still needs
doing, email me your account name and I'll fix it for you.

There's some spares on the network on Paolithica that hasn't been
done yet, if you want to tack your portal on ...

Or you can have the party explore a newly discovered portal
somewhere. Feel free to use Rangifero if you wish

You mean the Seagate Sun Sport times, Scandalous Rag.
The Seagate Guild eat thier own.
I ask you, they could at least get the spelling in the Head Line correct if
nothing else.
And as for Dwarf Pox being spread by dwarves Drinking and Bathing in the
Same Water we do , it's utter shiite.
Everyone knows Dwarves don't bathe and only drink things with Alcohol in
them. :-)

Welcome back

Helen
