Ignorance here - what's SVG and can you convert it to something
primitive like JPG or PNG for us technologically crippled?

I have an A3 pencil map of Ranke with annotations from several GMs. I
believe that Ian Wood has an electronic representation of that map. Most
older maps of Ranke show many lakes that are no longer present.

Don't forget Mordeaux, which has a border with Tuscana. I'm supposed to
be doing a map of Mordeaux soon, and would like to co-ordinate with its
neighbours. Currently I have a 1.5 x 2.5 cm outline of its provinces...

Have to admit, haven't heard of SVG either. What is it please?

I've got a scan of an old pencil map of Ranke. Unfortunately, the
ones on the Wiki seem to be off-line. Mine can be found at

I fell over after trying to understand the second paragraph.

I'd offer to scan this if needed (Ian is somewhat busy currently, so might
not have a chance to go hunting for stuff) on Thursday, but I've lent my
scanner out. I'm sure Gordon can scan it after Thursday.

This is my understanding of the techno-babble (more senior techno-geeks please correct me if I'm
wrong here)...

SVG is the (web graphics) way of the future! Or one of the ways of the future, the one endorsed
by W3C and implemented by Firefox. If it gets adopted and supported by the big commercial
application makers (Microsoft, Adobe, Macromedia...) then it might be the way of the future, until
something better comes along.

It is an XML format for graphics. Being XML it is plain text and human readable (in the same way
that most of us can read Spanish and German but not understand a word).

Browsers (Firefox or IE with plugins) and applications can read these plain text files and display
them as pretty graphics. The display of them and functionality related to them can be modified by
browser settings or web page formatting.

Web applications (like the Wiki and Character Database) could generate and modify XML that gets
rendered as images by your browser.
Lots of cool things that can potentially be done with them once the standard is widely supported.

I believe that there are some nice editors for SVG in the Linux open source world, not sure if
there are any good ones for us lesser geeks operating in the Windows world yet.
Once there are, and assuming it gets adopted by the corporate world, it would probably be a good
standard format for our maps.

Ross, please correct me if I'm out of date but I think it is still a little too close to the
(b)leading edge of technology for most of us.

Cheers, Stephen.

I can not export out to SVG as a option from CorelDraw 9.01.
If anyone import from EPS and export to SVG I have some files which may be
of use.

The current map which came from Kelsie's work in AI (which was done for a
number of GMs) and then convert to Coreldraw, and I have been adding Chris
Caulfields maps of the Western Kingdom too, can be viewed as a 5 MB JPG file
at:

  http://www.parituhu.co.nz/jono/WK-Current.jpg

Maybe this can be off assistance.
I can create a cut down EPS of Ranke and surronds.

Kind regards,

Jono

SVG is an XML based format for graphics. It is similar to Postscript in
that it is a collection of drawing commands rather than a bitmap / pixmap.

I use it because there is a very good drawing program under Linux called
Inkscape, similar to Adobe Illustrator / Corel Draw. It is also
supported on later version of firefox directly.

I can convert EPS into SVG using ghostscript and ps2svg.ps but mostly
I'm cleaning up bitmaps then using a tracing tool to produce the path of
the coast, river etc. I can send people examples if they want.

Cheers,

Ross

PS: Many thanks Jono and Keith for the links.
