This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_0000_01C7AE7E.CACB9380 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Hi all, I hope someone on here can help me. I'm trying to find out how training an animals works and what training an animal will do for the animal. Part One In the book it says "A beast master must spend (12-rank) months to train an animal" and then has some modifiers. I'm just checking I am reading this right. Take Menolly, rank 2 in beast master. She is training Briar, a dog. So it's 10 months x modifiers. Being easily domesticated is x 0.5 and being raised by Menolly is also x 0.5. It then says the unmodified months number is multiplied by all applicable modifiers. Do I add the modifiers together to get x 1 (getting 10 months), or do I times the 10 months by .5 and then again by .5 (getting 2.5 months) It doesn't say if modifiers are added or done separately. Part Two If Menolly spends this time (10months or 2.5 months) training Briar, what does it actually do for Briar? I haven't found any guidelines. There is a mention that a loyalty check uses a rank. But how does the ranking work? Does spending 1 whole time set of training give the animal rank 0? If I want to make it rank 1 do I have to spend the same time slot again, and so on up the ranks. Is there a limit on how many ranks an animal can have? And do these ranks confer any other skills, checks etc. Does an animal have to have "generic" ranks in "Trained" to learn other specific skills? Part Three Wardogs have the weapon bite which according to the bestiary can have ranks. The bestiary describes wardogs as a specific animal. Can other animals be trained as "war" animals? Or is it just horses and dogs? Would the trainer need ranks in Bite/kick/unarmed to teach it or does the beastmaster specialization include the ability to teach animal behavioural related skills? Would this "war/weapon" training go like normal weapons, 1 week to rank 0 and then x 2 weeks per rank you are achieving? Or by the beastmaster training time mentioned above? Thoughts And are there any other skills that can be taught to animals? Tracking, hunting, carrying messages, flying? I'm just thinking dogs atm but is there a limit on what specifically can/cannot be taught? (monkeys-reading+writing, birds-cartography, rabbits-unarmed-claw :-) ) Would that depend on the trainer, what's being trained and what the animals already know? ? This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_000F_01C7AEA8.E8290690 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Karen, I agree in general with the other posters. However, in your specific situation: (1) 2.5 months. All time multipliers multiply. (2) This gives you a dog trained in basic "Dog"-type commands. The dog doesn't have a rank in being trained. (3) This training that you give may convey some ranks in appropriate skills - probably basic combat skills for a war dog, or ranger-tracking for a blood hound, etc. There are no ranks or guidelines for this - see a sane GM. (4) Animals can only learn animal-type skills. E.g. Monkeys can't write, Birds can't draw maps, Rabbits can't learn pit-fighting (Hares can learn boxing, except they still bite & kick when the ref's distracted). If there aren't records of animals learning a skill, then they probably can't, but that's another reason why you run weird/wacky ideas past another GM. (5) When you are GMing, if you want a monkey that can write because it helps your plot, and it doesn't break the flavour of your game, you can do it. All above restrictions are guidelines for player expectations, not hard rules for what GMs can do or give out (have you seen the broken pets some GMs have given out.) Andrew _____ From: dq-owner@dq.sf.org.nz [mailto:dq-owner@dq.sf.org.nz] On Behalf Of Menolly Sent: Thursday, 14 June 2007 12:23 p.m. To: dq@dq.sf.org.nz Subject: [dq] Beastmastery questions Hi all, I hope someone on here can help me. This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_0021_01C7AEDB.E50B1C90 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit On second reading, I was reading the loyalty formula as rank of animal, not rank of beastmaster, which changes some of my questions. Lots to think about. Hmm, would anyone mind if I try to put something together for when you train dogs? And especially what you can teach them to do? In levels of how much training is needed to teach what skill and such like? I would really like to play Menolly as a beastmaster who has animal companions that are always with her, that can do useful stuff, not someone who just has pets that get in the road and have to be left behind all the time. she doesn't like leaving her babies behind. Regards, Karen _____ From: Andrew Withy Karen, I agree in general with the other posters.
