I use beastmaster as a roleplaying ranking if I have been Hunting and =
Hawking, then I will rank beastmaster avians if I feel it is more =
fitting to advance in that than say courtier. Actually trying to =
beastmaster my own bird would be foolish

Sorry I think I left a line off this at the end. it should read.
This reliance on GM write-ups or mainly between adventuring use of =
Beastmaster is probably a direct result of how poorly defined and =
un-adventuring friendly the skill as written is.

I agree the skill is as written is poorly defined.
Presumably a domesticated horse can be ridden or will pull a cart or =
plow, a dog is house broken and obeys basic commands, and a falcon =
returns to the grove.=20
Other than defining a base chance for getting it to do something =
unnatural like walk though a flaming doorway, what does training get =
you?
As keeping control of your horse in combat is covered in =
Horsemanship, what do you get for your extra time ep and sp?=20
When you train your horse or dog is the only benefit an animal =
that's less likely to stray... A bit of rope is cheaper and easier.
I think that part of the reason this only comes up occasionally is =
that most animals either come with a full "its trained to" write up from =
the GM, is governed by the Wicca familiars rules, is sentient or a =
combination of these.
And that most other beastmasters have the skill as I do with Thorn, =
as a non adventuring skill that backs up the claim that she trains =
warhorses for her own and others use.
