Subject[dq] Extinguish Fire and Fire Proofing - Minor Fixes
FromStephen Martin
DateMon, 10 Mar 2008 11:08:59 +1300 (NZDT)
I think these are both minor issues and if there is no contention then I think they should be
added to errata for the next rule book.

If anyone disagrees then please say so and I'll raise them as rules changes and candidates for
Fast Tracking.

Cheers, Stephen.

-----------

 Extinguish Fire Spell (G-2)
 Range: 15 feet + 15 / Rank
 Effects: ... in a 10 foot (+ 10 / Rank) sphere.
All the volume affected must be within range of the spell.

I believe that the 10' sphere is 10' diameter not 10' radius si it should read:
 ... in a 10 foot (+ 10 / Rank) diameter sphere.

 Fireproofing (G-5)
Effects: ... also protected against smoke effects .., hypothermia and sunstroke.

I believe this is meant to be hyperthermia (over heating) not hypothermia (freezing), but perhaps
it could be changed to the less modern/scientific term heatstroke.

Don't errata to the rule book get voted on anyway?
Either as being errata or as part of the vote to except the changed, up
dated rule book into use as the rule book.
And the Hyper, Hypo seems to be a clear error of meaning so go add it to the
list.

As for the diameter thing it's more a clarification, and probably needs to
be tabled for a vote as it's more than a misspelling or bad gramma but then
again if there are no objections its something that can be left to vote on
at rulebook time.

For 2006 I moved a block vote to ratify straight-out corrections (that I
found in the course of editing), and also very quickly ran through anything
that I thought could be perceived as a rule change and got confirmation.

I don't see any need to wait for the next rulebook production process to
discuss (and vote on, if required) any little issues that crop up.

I try to track things at
http://www.dragonquest.org.nz/dqwiki/index.php/Noticed_Rulebook_Issues
to make it easier for whoever does it next time.
Due to looking over the e-list from last September, I notice we never
resolved our discussions about stacking/queuing from that time (to open a
can of worms).

Cheers
Errol

It's an erratum all right.... I've found a Fire College draft which reads:
"The spell protects the target from all non-magical fire and heat
effects. An entity target is also protected against smoke effects
(including smoke inhalation), hyperthermia and sunstroke."
Somebody must have decided that was a typo, and "corrected" it.
Heatstroke works just fine by me.

Actually, the same draft read:
"When successfully cast, this spell will extinguish all fire within a
chosen volume equivalent to a cube with each side being 5ft + 5/Rank,
all of which must be a contiguous closed volume and must be within
the spell's range. On a multiple effect this volume may be doubled
or tripled. This spell will not extinguish magical fire."
In a later draft this was increased to"
"When successfully cast, this spell will extinguish all fire in a
cube up to 10ft + 10/Rank on a side. All the volume effected must be
within range of the spell. On a multiple effect this volume may be
doubled or tripled. The Adept may always choose to extinguish a
smaller volume of Fire than their maximum by rank."

The confusion began when somebody decided that round things were more
magical than square things, I guess....

Jacqui

My version of MS Word (as an example) doesn't have hyperthermia in its
dictionary.

Almost certainly an editing error somewhere along the line.

Cheers
