--=====================_347405031==.ALT Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"; format=flowed Seagate Adventurer's Guild Autumn 808 WK 0) Pre Guild meeting a) Vote taken to accept the new Cazala Guidebook - Passed (8/2/0) b) Mage Current. Change to effective speed - Passed (7/0/1) c) Procedures. It was noted that our procedures for rulechanges need to be formalised and updated. Subsequent rule changes should follow the procedure. The old procedures are to reprinted for revision and a list of changes that have fallen by the wayside is to be produced to see if anyone wishes to pick them up. d) Erzabet was nominated for Star of Alusia by Jono. For convincing the rest of the party to let her handle the very delicate negotiations with Beast Rabbin. 1) Adventures going out a) Trials of the Trident (Jono) - Matt Tumbledown requires two more people for these trials. They will be favoured by the titans and learn tricks with tridents. Tuesdays, medium/high. b) Chasing White Elephants (Bernard) - Someone has attempted to assassinate the Duke on the Plane of Farway. The party needs to find out who did it and to do so discretely so that the Duke doesn't end up at war with the wrong faction. Thursday or Friday. Medium. c) Legacy of Kael (William) - The previous party encountered the Laughing God. Now they're looking for replacement party members to cure him. To do this, they have to find the Gods followers, which may be difficult as worshipping the old elven gods is illegal. The Wild Elves have also been stirred up. Tuesday, Avondale, Medium d) Please can we have our Prince back (Phil) - There is a problem with the succession and the 4th son is now in line. A party is required to get him as he is currently adventuring in the mountains. The King is ill and the older sons can no longer inherent as as they died and were resurrected, which is also raising doubts on their lineage. So the Prince has to be brought back alive without dying. Also, only natives to the plane can ascend to the throne. Require one more person, High. e) Melody (Jeff) - need a party for White Raven, A guild party helped him ascend to Godhood and he has decided on a way to solve the Icefall problem. Wants a party to 'remove' the universe creators. Two or three more people required. Wednesday, low/medium. f) Travelling ghost (Jim) - Wants some lds to help the boos out to deal with 'nazis' offplane, Halfway decent folks required and the job shouldn't take so long. Jim, Immortals game. 2) Awards a) Smartest i) Lath - Undead dust was settling over Brastor so Lath had the idea of creating a rainstorm and washing it all away. ii) Albion the Mad - The orcs had discovered that the party were at the top of one of their towers so Albion had the idea of throwing Lizette off the tower to distract them. In reality they used an orc with an illusion. iii) Mortimer Graves - The banerock the party were fighting disappeared into the earth to hide. A Tunnel was punched down to it and Mortimer cursed the creature in such a way that the earth could no longer hide it or shelter it's evil. iv) Sooty - used salamanders in a box to provide a time delay distraction while the party got the slaves out. v) Albion the Mad - Controlled the captured mage and sent him back to the orc encampment with a chaos item. vi) Grindar - made a special golem for Hamish when he was rendered 'armless' Winner - Albion b) Bravest i) Dalran - Had snuck into Hell to tag Furfur's lieutenants as well as standing at 'ground zero' to trigger an item to trap the demons that were teleporting in. ii) No vote Winner - Dalran c) Stupidest i) Lucius - While interrogating, managed to kill the captive and discovered he was pacted to Foras. Lucius bounced off Foras's chest as he attempted to exit the room. ii) Vychan - To help protect the townsfolk from the undead hordes, elementals were set up on guard. Vychan wandered next to one, forgetting he is currently twelve percent undead. iii) Kern. At the second encounter with the banerock, he thought the Tunnelling idea was so good, he did it again. Unfortunately the banerock was levitating and the entire party fell down the hole. iv) Dwork - Even after being told not to use fire magic in a swamp, he cast a fireball and blew the entire party up. Winner - Kern d) Best Death i) Dalran - In the fight with Furfur, Dalran picked up a staff that he knew would kill him. He was able to teleport to Vahalla with it and died there. ii) No vote Winner - Dalran 3) Star of Alusia Erzabet - Certain artifacts were required to complete the mission. Beast Rabban and his minions had set up an ambush for the party and were waiting. Erzabet also suspected the party had been cursed to be rude and, any mistake here was certain to be fatal. She decided their best chance was to negotiate and and convinced the rest of the party to stay quiet and let her do it. With the odds stacked against her she was able to convince the bad guys that there was something in it for them if the party survived. Vote to award Star of Alusia to Erzabet - Passed (17/2/5) 4) Other Business a) Engalton reminded new members that Adventurer starter kits from Newhaven were available. Proposed addition is: Carried objects/entities are free to move within this volume normally, as in a non magical current. This movement may effectively increase (or decrease) their overall speed or allow them to exit the effect. c) Reduce the speed increase granted by the spell to: 5 miles per hour (+1 / 2 full Ranks). -----Original Message----- From: dq-announce-owner@dq.sf.org.nz [mailto:dq-announce-owner@dq.sf.org.nz]On Behalf Of Keith Smith Sent: Tuesday, 11 March 2008 10:17 To: dq-announce@dq.sf.org.nz Subject: [dq-announce] Guild meeting minutes - Autumn 808WK Seagate Adventurer's Guild Autumn 808 WK 0) Pre Guild meeting a) Vote taken to accept the new Cazala Guidebook - Passed (8/2/0) b) Mage Current. Subject | [dq] Ships etc ... |

For one of my PC's .. I'm looking for the price of a houseboat (something like the barges that go up and down the canals). Doesn't have to be new .. a fixer-upper will do. After all, it's not going anywhere, just going to be sitting by a dock in a tidal swamp near the sea. Anyway, while trying to find this I looked in both our Players Guide and GMs Guide and under Ships - both were referring to the Ships Supplement. Did one actually come out and, if so, could someone please send me a copy as I can't find it. Thanks Keith -- to unsubscribe notify mailto:dq-request@dq.sf.org.nz -- |

While on the subject, I have a high-quality coffee-table book from the Auckland Museum on Pacific exploration and settlement. Quite a bit about different canoe designs, navigation methods etc, let me know if you want to take a look sometime. I suggest you start here: http://www.dragonquest.org.nz/dqwiki/index.php/Ships or more specifically for the pricing: http://www.dragonquest.org.nz/dqwiki/index.php/Ships#Ship_Size Keith Smith wrote: > For one of my PC's .. This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_00B9_01C88393.76037B70 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Must be an old GMs Guide cKeith ause I have some stuff on Ships in mine = on pages 21-24. Speaking of Ships=20 While trolling around the Net looking for data on the speeds of old = sailing vessels I had problems finding hard data on the speeds of the = various types of vessels because if speeds were given it was usually a = max and gave no indication of how strong a wind was needed to get this. Then I found this paper on the sailing properties of the Hanse Cog they = dug out of the mud in some Port and used both wind tunnel and sea trials = with a replica to get the data for. While most of the speed stuff was in mathematical formulas they had = produced a very nice table which showed the ships average speed over all = courses to the wind in relation to wind speed. And roughly it worked out = that the speed of this boat in knots was roughly the same as the Force = of the wind. i.e. that in a force 4 wind it averaged 4 knots as it = tacked along and in a force 6 wind it averaged 6=20 The stuff below is copied from this report A Hanse cog was discovered during dredging work in the port of Bremen in = 1962. The cog's construction was dated to the year 1380 by means of = dendrochronological analysis. Until this finding was made, virtually = nothing was known about the shape and rigging of Hanse cogs. The sole = source for information on their appearance had been illustrations on = seal impressions, which provide only an approximate idea. Accounts of = possible traveling speeds vary greatly, i.e. between 3.3 and 10 knots; = data on weather conditions and wind directions are completely absent = from reports.=20 The Hanse cog's average statistical speeds for all courses to the wind, = calculated from the readings, were: Beaufort average ship=20 speed over all=20 courses to the wind=20 =20 3 3.4 kn =20 4 4.0 kn =20 5 5.1 kn =20 6 6.0 kn=20 Sailing on a reach with a wind of Bft. 7, the ship attained a speed of 8 = knots for short periods; this reading corresponds to a Froude number of = 0.3.=20 I have a similar top speed for Longships of 8 knots... Looking at this I = suspect its because no one is game to go sailing in anything more than a = force 7 or so gale, higher winds are storm conditions.=20 As the subject of Mage wind as a means of moving a vessel was put = forward at the gods meeting this data gives you all an Idea of why I = said that Mage wind is no problem and even using both the boats max = sailing speed is its unchanged as Sailing Ships don't go the wind speed. = Mage wind only gets strong enough for a good strong breeze at max rank = (force 6), and this relationship between sailing speed and wind force = means that all the air mage is able to give the ship is the Idea wind to = get its max speed from.( A good strong breeze being what the GMs Guide = means by 'fair conditions, IMO.) Where the mage has less than max rank you can use the winds Force to = guestimate the proportion of the max speed you can achieve. e.g. at rank = 0 the wind speed is 5 mph or force 2 so 2/6th of max speed: or at rank = 6 it would be 11mph or force 3 so ship speed is 3/6 or 1/2 max sailing = speed. Thus we get some nice rules of thumb for GMing sailing ships the = Average speed of a ship in a natural (but not ideal) wind is the wind = force and the speed of a ship under an Ideal or mage wind is its 1/6th = its max speed x the force of that wind.
