Even if the weapon's max rank is lower than the derived rank? It is very rare that the weapon's max rank is lower than the derived rank. Only Hand Axe and Net go to less than Rank 5 - you'd need to be over max rank in a related weapon and Rank 10 Warrior to be in that situation; or Rank 12 in both a related weapon and Warrior for any of the weapons with a max Rank of 5. I'd not worry about it unless you had those sorts of Ranks. Given those characters tend to be extreme, I have no problem with them having effective Rank 5 Hand axe rather than Rank 4 - that's the least of the opposition's worries! Under the rules you can't get a derived rank higher than max weapon rank. There is not qualifying weapon whose max rank is less than 4. Unless your a rank 9 or 10 warrior you can't get a defalt rank 5. And as you use the lesser of half warrior or half weapon in same category..... The 2 qualifying weapons whose max rank is 4 are Net and Hand Axe In Axes, the Battle axe max rank is 7 so half is (3.5 round in favour) 4, no problem there. Bola in entangling goes to 6, the rest of the weapons top out at 5, half is 3, so again no problem. If you rank a language when you already know a language in the same family or group at a higher rank, you get a discount of 20%. When do you get a discount of 30% for ranking a language? (a) when you know a language in the same family at a higher rank, and you know a language in the same group at a higher rank (these could be the same or different languages). (b) when you know one language that is both in the same family and group, at a higher rank. I always thought the former, but re-reading the rules in the Language skill chapter, it looks like the latter. Opinions on the original intent of the rules, how people play it, etc., all appreciated. It is Case-A, the more general case that was intended, since that will benefit the student; that is how I've ranked my own languages & how I approve the ranking of my players (in theory). If people only have a few languages, probably all their examples fall into Case-B, by default.
