Subject[dq] Languages: Culhuan, Themiskyra & Dead Languages
FromStephen Martin
DateThu, 6 Aug 2009 11:07:08 +1200 (NZST)
Thank you all for the responses. I have updated the wiki Languages page with the changes I think
should be made.

I have a couple of last questions...

Culhuan - Draconic/Saurime - does anyone know where or when it was used?

Themiskyra or Thermiskyra (which is correct spelling?) - am I right in assuming this is a 'Lost
Land' that is presumed to exist as people occasionally turn up claiming to be from there or have
been there but nobody can locate it on a map.

And I've defined which languages are Dead Languages though this is a potentially changing list as
Adventurers mess with the world.

Cheers, Stephen.

Yes .. there's some sort of magical barrier protecting it. Phaeton
has been there. See http://dq.sf.org.nz/library/snsp9901.pdf

In essence yes. Themiskyra is a hidden island, the home a race of
near-immortal Amazons - unknown to the general world, but several
guild-members have been there. Most scholars who have heard of the
island believe it to lie in the Isles of Adventure, but is actually
somewhere in the Isles of Mystery (in the Sea Storms) west of Raniterre;
however the physical location is irrelevant as it may only reached, or
left, via a magical storm. The Themiskyrans are isolationists, but are
willing to help any sisterhood fighting evil.

Few people outside the island use the language, mostly spies or
conspirators, because Themiskyrans only use their own language to write
to their spies and allies throughout Alusia. The written form is uses
multiple colours of ink & is very compact so that a messenger-dove can
carry the equivalent of several pages of Common. =20

Culhuan is the language of the
Saurians<http://www.dragonquest.org.nz/dqwiki/index.php/Saurian>found
throughout Coastal, Island, Jungle, and Highland areas of Central
Terranova. I'm not sure it should go to Rank 10; although given the variety
of Saurian sub-types and possible dialects 10 is possible and 9 is probable.

It and Frogelf (aka more formally Tenochan, the language of the Spawn city
-- Apollyon's place in the central Terranovan highlands) share a
pictographic written system and many loan words have gone each way; they
should probably share a language group.

Culhuan should probably also be in the Draconic group, and Frogelf in the
Archaic.

Cheers,
Martin
