SubjectRe: [dq] Effects of volcanic ash over Alusia
FromIan Wood

Hi Keith,

The major potential distal effect on Europe from Iceland is that ash
accumulates on the turbine blades of aircraft engines, causing damage and
eventually flameout, and "sandpapers" the outside - which is good news for
plane painters.

Given that the ash is normally moving quite slowly, and most modes of
transport are either low or slow (or both) and none use turbine engines, I
see little danger to most flights from a distant volcano.

Of course Icelandic eruptions are small affairs, similar in scale to an
Auckland event.

A larger event, such as Mt Pinotubo or Mt St. Helens could cause significant
disruption because they put so much more ash into the air, meaning flyers
could experience coughing and sore eyes (asphyxiation and blindness).
Fortunately these tend to be over and done with quite quickly, one large
eruption rather than a festering sore.

The other effect is the deposition of fine ash over farm land, poisoning the
soil and abrading the teeth of herbivores. Sufficient thickness of ash will
cause livestock to starve and plants to wither. Such problems have not been
reported in England etc as far as I know.

OK, so likelihood in the Western Kingdoms part of Alusia.
I think this would be unlikely to be worse than what Europe is currently
experiencing.
Places that regularly experience this style of inconvenience tend to have
plants and animals that can respond quite quickly, moving away or recovering
quickly.
New Zealand is such a place, and suggests our vegetation has evolved to
re-colonise bare land every 1000 years or so. As our last big eruption was
about 2000 years ago this gives me some degree of comfort.
And, anywhere with a history of such events would include it in its history,
and I don't know of anywhere with such a background, but that is just my
take on alusian cultures.

On the other hand, washer women could increase their rates.

Hope this helps,

Ian

Subject: [dq] Effects of volcanic ash over Alusia

Given the events of the past few weeks, I have been thinking about what
would happen if a volcano sent it's ash cloud all over the Western
Kingdoms and down into Carzala.

I suspect flying on Star Wings and Air Mage flying wouldn't be affected
much as they fly rather low but I'm not sure about cloud flying as it
may be high enough to get into the ash stream. Proabably have some bad
effects on the cloud itself.

And what if a volcano was to spew some rather odd magical fallout over
the countryside?

Anyway, just tossing a couple of thoughts out there and also, does any
one know where the dormant or active volcanos on Alusia are?

Keith

Ah yes, the sociological phenomena may well be worth watching.

I do recall reading that several enterprising folk threw themselves into the
Seine on New Years eve 1500 AD, to beat the rush.

No one in England would have done such a thing, as the English New Year was
on the Feast of the Annunciation
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feast_of_the_Annunciation> on 25 March. And
by then they would have noticed that there was a general lack of wide spread
death on the more calendraly advanced continent. And more importantly, that
the wine trade was continuing - which is just as well else they may have
died early from drinking the local water. In deed a proof of the existence
of God could be that he staggered the New Year around the world so that any
true Apocalypse would see orderly queues forming without the normal pushing
and shoving so associated with packaged holidays which can so ruin the
experience.

Now if you want something slightly more dramatic than giants getting all het
up because ash is falling in their beer, but less dramatic than goats
materializing on top of philosophers (much the reverse to the normal
relationship and probably why it was noticed by the general public), and
probably about as dramatic as the prime minister of Destiny being chosen by
a scimitar lobbing wench, then a large eruption in Terra Nova would cover
the skies over the entire continent in ash. And we can blame the drow for
back firing anoher ritual, the alchemists, the elves for failing to stop
them, the churches, the barbarians.. All of whom are also blaming each
other, but in an uncouth and ill considered manner.

Not like us at all.

And this would go on for years,

And the eruption too.

And possibly require guild parties to fix things, like imprisoning all the
prophets and any nearby goats, changing the road signs in front of the
barbarian hordes so they go the wrong way, or cooling the balrog that is
causing the volcano.

Must go, luncheon at Alfonse's beckons.

Ian

Volcanic Ash over Alusia can mean only one thing - wholesale chaos! Consider
the effects.

Earth aspected creatures feel empowered. All that dirt in the air means that
some penalties associated with being airborne are now reduced. Earth is at
last taking its rightful place as the ranking element in the universes!
Conversely air-aspected creatures have lost some of their airborne bonuses
and mutter darkly about the taint that those on the earth side have now
bought to the pristine airs above.

Fire creatures by contrast are sitting around sniggering. The whole world is
about to be consumed in fire and Surt and Loki are laughing their heads off.
Armageddon and the march of giants is but a step away.

By contrast, out on the plains, the barbarian tribes have at last seen the
sign they've waited for, for the last 20 generations. Twenty blood-moons in
a row! Clearly its time to put civilisation to the sword! As the Great
Prophet Skog Hipsmasher said just last week "Twenty blood moons! If that's
not the Gods saying Rape and Pillage boys, I don't know what is!"

Meanwhile, back in more civilised climes, several Empires have checked their
lunar calendars and discovered portents of various dire natures. Some
predict an upcoming barbarian invasion, others now know that formerly secret
heirs to various lost thrones are about to be revealed, several forgotten
priesthoods have interpreted the omens of the bloody skies as an excuse to
go public and in one commercially minded kingdom, a few magicians have
interpreted this as a message form the God of Commerce to introduce a new,
single currency across their continent, at knife point if required.

More prosaically, some areas - those with more sulphur than ash in the air -
are seeing blue moons. This they know is lucky - perhaps they will avoid the
barbarian invasions their red-sunset seeing neighbours are predicting.

Of course those areas seeing red sunsets, red moons and blue moons all at
the same time have all gone mad - the omens are impossible to interpret.
Many of these have sealed themselves in their own burial crypts and cut
their own throats, plus those of a few of their neighbours they didn't like
as well. One practical school of philosophisers has interpreted the
different moons as both good luck and bad luck. Hence while the most
appallingly luck may be about to strike, good fortune could equally come
from the resulting chaos. The prime advocate of this school of thought, Nob
the Predictor, was himself killed soon after making that prediction. He was
killed by a goat which fell out of a clear, ash free sky, while walking his
wife home the evening after they had one the local lottery. Locals have
taken this as proof of Nob's theories.

Finally, the assorted churches militant have taken all the ash, blood and
fire in the air as proof that the Evil One is about to be loosed on Alusia.
Fortunately their predictions are exactly matched by the various diabolist's
groups hidden across Alusia. Both have decided that the eruptions mean God
or their various angelic or diabolic patrons have determined a last showdown
is required and all groups are now setting on each other with gusto. This
has provided a welcome relief to the local peasantry as such open conflict
leaves little time for either group to harass them as usual.

And out in the fields all that occulted sun means the dead have started to
walk by day.

Nope. Can't see the eruption having too much affect on Alusia. Sounds like
business as usual.

You know.... *taps the Campaign Committee on their collective shoulders*...

This sounds like one humdinger of a campaign event.... so why not do it?

For inspiration consider the 1783 eruprion of another Icelandic volcano,
Laki... not an especially violent eruption... about a Mt St Helens or
so... but it was the eruption that kept on giving.... for EIGHT whole
months - it killed two million people world-wide through crop failures
and famines. Now, we don't necessarily need to go that far... but...
sounds like plenty for adventurers to do.

Check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laki if you're interested in finding
out more.

Jacqui
