I think the current weapon rank requirements should be simplified and improved.
The max rank in a new category per warrior rank proposal is simple, but probably too much.

Could I please get some opinion/feedback/straw-poll vote on the following options/variations.

1) Leave it as is with the current (Warrior 2.0) requirements

2) Make 'em Pay! A max rank weapon in each Category per Warrior rank is the least it should be.

3) Max Rank Weapon in a Cat is good but not every rank.
3a) Easier at low end, hard at high end (e.g. New cat at ranks 1,3,5,7,8,9,10)
3b) Hard to start, easier at high end (e.g. New cat at ranks 0,1,2,3,5,7,9)

4) Slightly easier - must achieve a max rank weapon in recently acquired category before going
to next Warrior rank. E.g. Warrior rk0, choose Axes as New Category, must then achieve Max
Rank in an Axe before they can get rk1 Warrior.
NB one effect of this is that new characters can start as Warriors (with a lot of ranking to
do before they can advance) which is almost impossible currently.

5) 3 + 4 - rank the weapon after acquiring the new category and not every rank (E.g.
0,2,4,6,7,8,9).

6) Something else - please specify.

Thanks, Stephen.

I like option 4 best and option 3 the least.

Rather than Max rank how about must achieve a rank weapon in recently
acquired category HIGHER than Warrior rank before going to next Warrior rank
(or highest rank available if none of the category goes as high as next
Warrior rank).

This makes low rank Warrior in the 'effort to gain' in the same ball park as
other low ranked skills but gets progressively more difficult. But if you
don't choose entangling weapons until late then you are going to learn Whip
to high ranks (is this good or bad :-) )

"Warrior =1 when attacking."
It is very simple and clear. How important is it to make the exception for full TMR charges?

The TMR limit is a rule specific to 26+ agility extra actions.

IMO adding this ability to Pole weapons or shields would be low priority, there are much
better returns for your xp, but if it is important enough to some character to do it then
bully for them, they move TMR+1 when charging with that weapon.

Cheers, Stephen.

Yes I quite like Rosemmary's suggestion about a rank higher than current
warrior.

Another alternative is to take the current weapon rank requirements for rk10
warrior and make these requirements by warrior level.

It would mean ranks 1 through 4 you need to get a weapon to rank 7 (or
better) for each rank, then ranks 6 through 10 you need to get new weapon to
rank 5 each rank.

This is a little harder than but current but keeps the basic shape while
simplifying the process. It also means the bulk of the time is taken up
getting to rank 5 which is when the new skills start and this will mean
these skills are harder to get to.

Sorry, far too easy! Rank 5 Warrior within a year without breaking a sweat.
E.g.
Rk 0 Warrior, Unarmed to rk 1.
Rk 1 Warrior, Estoc to rk 2.
Rk 2 Warrior, Falchion to rk 3.
Rk 3 Warrior, Lance to rk 4.
Rk 4 Warrior, Flail to rk 5.
Rk 5 Warrior, Dagger to rk 6.
Rk 6 Warrior, Glaive to rk 7.
Rk 7 Warrior, Battle Axe to rk 7.
Rk 8 Warrior, Hand & Half to rk 7.
Rk 9 Warrior, Mace to rk 5 (I'm fairly sure nothing in Blunt goes over 5).
Rk 10 Warrior, Shield to rk 4.

How do these proposed changes effect people who already have warrior ranks?
I think rank 8+ warriors are going to be upset if they suddenly go to 7 or
less despite having done possibly 3 masterworks.

FromNeil Davies

hi all,

Adding my views on some of this discussion:

On entry requirements; I agree that the existing system is
complicated, but given all of the potential pitfalls of changing it to
as per Stephen's suggestion [ie impacting existing warriors, and crazy
time requirements], and that given the current rules don't ACTUALLY
impact game time (so therefore I would consider it less of a priority)
, I would advise not including the suggested change to entry
requirements.

Also note that the originally identified problem was that of
Complication, not "the entry requirements are not strict enough". Is
there any consensus on that? If so, then I might change my opinion.

So if a change is really is wanted for simplication only, a compromise
as per Dean's suggestion below might work pretty well.

Apart from that, I like what Stephen has proposed in general. My one
significant exception is all of the "extra abilities". My concerns
are :
- It seems this is making the run-time very complicated again, with no
less than 13 different options to apply - and maybe more!
- this is a standard skill, that will be used by normal NPCs. Are we
risking trying to implement otherwise "very high" custom abilities
into a standard skill, and so just raise the ante for PCs and parties?

(On the other hand, magic has always been too powerful in DQ... so
maybe I shouldn't be concerned)

Feedback welcome.

Cheers,

Neil.

How many people out there have non standard colleges. Ie shamanic or
Celestial navigator or holy fire etc.

I don't fully understand the voting options.

Dean's idea of Rank 5+ in a new category for each new rank (except Shield @
Rk 4) is my preference.

Of the rest, (2) is best, but too tough.

I'd add bows/slings/crossbows and thrown as two extra warrior categories.

I think the current weapon rank requirements should be simplified and
improved.
The max rank in a new category per warrior rank proposal is simple, but
probably too much.

Could I please get some opinion/feedback/straw-poll vote on the following
options/variations.

1) Leave it as is with the current (Warrior 2.0) requirements

2) Make 'em Pay! A max rank weapon in each Category per Warrior rank is the
least it should be.

3) Max Rank Weapon in a Cat is good but not every rank.
3a) Easier at low end, hard at high end (e.g. New cat at ranks
1,3,5,7,8,9,10)
3b) Hard to start, easier at high end (e.g. New cat at ranks 0,1,2,3,5,7,9)

4) Slightly easier - must achieve a max rank weapon in recently acquired
category before going
to next Warrior rank. E.g. Warrior rk0, choose Axes as New Category, must
then achieve Max
Rank in an Axe before they can get rk1 Warrior.
NB one effect of this is that new characters can start as Warriors (with a
lot of ranking to
do before they can advance) which is almost impossible currently.

5) 3 + 4 - rank the weapon after acquiring the new category and not every
rank (E.g.
0,2,4,6,7,8,9).

6) Something else - please specify.

Thanks, Stephen.

As a GM I've used "Dark Binding" and also given out some college fragments
as additional kinda-in-college abilities, e.g. some "Deep Earth" magics to
an Earth mage, some "Utterdark" to a Dark Celestial, etc.

As a player my warlock has a 2nd college called "Alchemy". (Distinct from
the skill of the same name -- and more like an expansion of the Special
Alchemy abilities of Witchcraft).
