I always thought this was rather simple...

If the GM says you have used X adventuring skill enough then you can rank it one rank with no
time expenditure.

If you had someone on adventure who was better at X and was giving you instruction then you
can get the 10% teaching XP discount at no monetary cost.

Or you can spend time, money, and experience with the guild just like any other skill.

Cheers, Stephen.

That seems a useful method. Let's change the wording so that it means the
same thing as Stephen's method.

The Adventuring Skills sub-section of the Ranking section doesn't mention the bit about needing a 'tutor' on adventure, so it is easy to overlook what is said in the intro to the Adventuring Skills section.

IMO what Stephen says below is a sensible change.
My gut reaction is that allowing on-Adventure self-learning at 'normal' cost is soft, but admin-wise it is easiest, and it's not a big enough deal for me to care.

3.6 Adventuring Skills
Adventuring Skills are skills used every day by adventurers
to survive, and thus are continually honed.
These skills include Horsemanship, Swimming, Flying,
Stealth and Climbing.
If you have extensively used an adventuring skill
while on adventure, you may rank this skill without
any time requirements. Otherwise, Ranking time is
as per normal skills.

29 Adventuring Skills (Ver 1.2)
These skills may be ranked as with any other skill.
The only differences are that all characters start with
swimming, climbing, stealth and horsemanship at
Rank 0, and if the skill is used conspicuously during
an adventure it can be ranked once without the
need for training time, but there must be a tutor with
a similar skill who is present to advise the character
on the technique they should employ.

Cheers
Errol
