This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_0010_01CB99D8.77DF0000 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit This make a lot os sense to me Helen. I was seeing that there are two issues also: The issue of the experienced player who just dosent want to play a bunny PC and dosent want to spend to long at low either, and the issue new player who wants to join the game but we imagine they wont want to play a bunny PC and if they do they wont get to play with most of the guild, (because many experienced guildies including me manage to skip the bunny stage by using GM ep or going on a game where someone gives them ep and time on day one). Jono's 20k or 30k proposal and Williams 20K cookie cutter approach both effectivly do away with the existance of Bunny as a category. This is a big change to the game. As William says it might be a good change maybe the world has moved on. However these proposals have not been discussed in this light.. i.e. lets do away with bunny as a category our game will get better heres how we could do it. Stephens proposal probably makes it easyer for a brand new PC to contribute something on a low game while keeping the bunny category. I think my preference is to give more EP per adventure eairly on and keep the bunny category. As a brand new player (only 10 years ago) I did not realise I could not do anything on my first game because I was new to the game. it was the 5 or 6 adventures at low that bugged me much more. Hamish _____ From: dq-owner@dq.sf.org.nz [mailto:dq-owner@dq.sf.org.nz] On Behalf Of Helen Saggers Sent: Saturday, December 11, 2010 9:08 PM To: dq@dq.sf.org.nz Subject: Re: [dq] Character Gen - Background Experience The way I see it we are sort of trying to discuss two different but closely related things at the same time here. 1st that a brand new never played before PC has no ranked spells, and unless it is a non mage no skills and less skill with a weapon than your average common guardsman. This is results either in a character that can barely follow around a more experienced party carrying the baggage or a whole party of bunny PCs who can barely find their way across Seagate to deliver a letter. Stephen's Proposal: Change the Background Experience in Character Generation from 250 experience to 2,500. Will help with bunny playability, it would allow the character to get several skills at Rk O-1 or perhaps higher ranks in one, as well as some ranks in weapons. The current 250 is too low to allow a PC to rank weapons beyond 0 and still take advantage of the starting skill at 100ep (unless the weapons something cheep like dagger) This change is small simple a can be done now with immediate effect to the playability of the new PCs of both current players and any new players we attract. The 2nd part of this is that we want to attract new players if not to grow the DQ guild at least to help maintain it, and if many of the current players, who are experienced role players find a brand new never played before PC with no ranked spells, no skills and less skill with a weapon than your average common guardsman boring to play, and as a result are discouraged from starting new PCs. How much worse is it for new players who are struggling with the system and Role playing in general. Some current players who have created new PCs have added GMing ep to them before t here first games, nothing wrong with this, but it doesn't help the new players with their first or second characters. Some GMs have given added start up ep with a training time limit to the bunny characters on their games. It works, I've seen it for myself 10,000ep and 6 months to a year creates characters roughly equal to those who have had one adventure. The problem with this is that noob players don't know the system and it is just one more complication to character creation. And while both methods work they're not universally applied and is not fixing the problem with character creation in the first place. I like William's Idea of creating character templates for New players to use as starting characters..... but .....this only really works for new players. Part of the DQ systems appeal is the flexibility to create a character with differing races stats skills and abilities from every other character. Player A creates a fighter mage of college X, Player B a more mage type with little combat ability. Add in weapon choices, race and optional Sex modifiers, minor things like aspect and skill mods. The system is too complicated to generate a large number of varied character templates. I think William should go ahead with templates for the creation of a standard 90 stat point human of each college with 10,000 or 20,000ep Its then up to GMs wither to allow the player to use such, just as it's currently up to them wither to give out start up ep with a training time limit for the bunny characters on their games. The creation of a standard noob template won't do much for players with their 2nd , 3rd or 5th characters. And the question of how much ep to give character on a template and should it be applied universally to all new characters or remain left to individual GMs will probably take some time to resolve. Stephen's Proposal is a quick simple change that can be instantly applied to all new characters, will have an effect on the playability of all new PCs. It doesn't stop any of the current practices, nor does it stop us overhauling the ep allowance and character generation rules in the future. I'm all for it. Helen PS having rank 6 (or more) in spells on a new character is of limited use when the PC is using cold iron weapons still. ------=_NextPart_000_0010_01CB99D8.77DF0000 Content-Type: text/html; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable <html xmlns:v=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:vml" = xmlns:o=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" = xmlns:w=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:word" = xmlns:st1=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" = xmlns=3D"http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40" xmlns:ns0=3D"http://schemas.microsoft.com/office/2004/12/omml"> <head> <meta http-equiv=3DContent-Type content=3D"text/html; = charset=3Dus-ascii"> <meta name=3DGenerator content=3D"Microsoft Word 11 (filtered medium)"> <!--[if !mso]> <style> v\:* {behavior:url(#default#VML);} o\:* {behavior:url(#default#VML);} w\:* {behavior:url(#default#VML);} .shape {behavior:url(#default#VML);} </style> <![endif]--><o:SmartTagType namespaceuri=3D"urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" = name=3D"PersonName" downloadurl=3D"http://www.microsoft.com"/> <!--[if !mso]> <style> st1\:*{behavior:url(#default#ieooui) } </style> <![endif]--> <style> <!--a:link {mso-style-priority:99;} span.MSOHYPERLINK {mso-style-priority:99;} a:visited {mso-style-priority:99;} span.MSOHYPERLINKFOLLOWED {mso-style-priority:99;} p.MSOPLAINTEXT {mso-style-priority:99;} li.MSOPLAINTEXT {mso-style-priority:99;} div.MSOPLAINTEXT {mso-style-priority:99;} p {mso-style-priority:99;} span.PLAINTEXTCHAR {mso-style-priority:99;} /* Font Definitions */ @font-face {font-family:Tahoma; panose-1:2 11 6 4 3 5 4 4 2 4;} @font-face {font-family:Calibri; panose-1:2 15 5 2 2 2 4 3 2 4;} @font-face {font-family:Consolas; panose-1:2 11 6 9 2 2 4 3 2 4;} /* Style Definitions */ p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {margin:0in; margin-bottom:.0001pt; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman";} a:link, span.MsoHyperlink {color:blue; text-decoration:underline;} a:visited, span.MsoHyperlinkFollowed {color:purple; text-decoration:underline;} p.MsoPlainText, li.MsoPlainText, div.MsoPlainText {margin:0in; margin-bottom:.0001pt; font-size:10.5pt; font-family:Consolas;} p {mso-margin-top-alt:auto; margin-right:0in; mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto; margin-left:0in; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman";} span.PlainTextChar {font-family:Consolas;} span.EmailStyle20 {mso-style-type:personal; font-family:Calibri; color:#1F497D;} span.EmailStyle21 {mso-style-type:personal-reply; font-family:Arial; color:navy;} @page Section1 {size:8.5in 11.0in; margin:1.0in 1.0in 1.0in 1.0in;} div.Section1 {page:Section1;} --> </style> <!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <o:shapedefaults v:ext=3D"edit" spidmax=3D"1026" /> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <o:shapelayout v:ext=3D"edit"> <o:idmap v:ext=3D"edit" data=3D"1" /> </o:shapelayout></xml><![endif]--> </head> <body lang=3DEN-US link=3Dblue vlink=3Dpurple> <div class=3DSection1> <div> <p class=3DMsoNormal><font size=3D2 color=3Dnavy face=3DCalibri><span = style=3D'font-size: 10.0pt;font-family:Calibri;color:navy'>This make a lot os sense to me = Helen.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p> <p class=3DMsoNormal><font size=3D2 color=3Dnavy face=3DCalibri><span = style=3D'font-size: 10.0pt;font-family:Calibri;color:navy'><o:p> </o:p></span></font></p= > <p class=3DMsoNormal><font size=3D2 color=3Dnavy face=3DCalibri><span = style=3D'font-size: 10.0pt;font-family:Calibri;color:navy'>I was seeing that there are two = issues also: The issue of the experienced player who just dosent = want to play a bunny PC and dosent want to spend to long at low either, and the = issue new player who wants to join the game but we imagine they wont want to play = a bunny PC and if they do they wont get to play with most of the guild, (because = many experienced guildies including me manage to skip the bunny stage by using GM ep or = going on a game where someone gives them ep and time on day = one).<o:p></o:p></span></font></p> <p class=3DMsoNormal><font size=3D2 color=3Dnavy face=3DCalibri><span = style=3D'font-size: 10.0pt;font-family:Calibri;color:navy'><o:p> </o:p></span></font></p= > <p class=3DMsoNormal><font size=3D2 color=3Dnavy face=3DCalibri><span = style=3D'font-size: 10.0pt;font-family:Calibri;color:navy'>Jono’s 20k or 30k proposal = and Williams 20K cookie cutter approach both effectivly do away with the = existance of Bunny as a category. This is a multipart message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_0004_01CB99F0.027C9170 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit We shouldn't do away with low/bunny. The low end of the game is the place to learn the rules. While its most probable that any new players will have played the so called 'role playing' computer games, table top role playing has differences. No return to last save or instant resurrection for a start. It's the place to learn the habits of having the numbers you need to hand, SC, defence, CC etc. It's the place to learn the team work, role playing etiquette, the book keeping and all the other skills that after 10,15,20+ years are second nature to most of us. That's part of why many of the old hands find it boring starting new characters in low games. Some people learn these things quickly, others take a little longer and that what those first 4-5 or so low adventures are for. Advancing new players with no previous Table top experience too quickly is/will be bad for them as players, they need to find their feet in low games before they advance to games where the rules are more mutable, and guild beasts are forged. That said holding back those who have found their feet and us old hands with slow progression isn't much fun either. Even if more Ep was awarded and the confident advanced to medium a few games earilier, it doesn't stop anyone remaining on low games for an extra 2, 3, 5 adventures, there is no hard and fast rule on what makes a character low , medium or high. Its dependant on the individual character and more importantly the individual player. Helen From: dq-owner@dq.sf.org.nz [mailto:dq-owner@dq.sf.org.nz] On Behalf Of Hamish Brown Sent: Sunday, 12 December 2010 8:42 a.m. To: dq@dq.sf.org.nz Subject: Re: [dq] Character Gen - Background Experience This make a lot os sense to me Helen. Is there another way for new players to get involved where they do develop the stuff you are raising here.. Because any experienced guild members is going to be able to find a way around playing low if they don't want to (I started a giant as my second PC to avoid it after playing just one year) and if this is the case then having bunny games is not working. Hamish _____ From: dq-owner@dq.sf.org.nz [mailto:dq-owner@dq.sf.org.nz] On Behalf Of Helen Saggers Sent: Sunday, December 12, 2010 11:31 AM To: dq@dq.sf.org.nz Subject: Re: [dq] Character Gen - Background Experience We shouldn't do away with low/bunny. This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_000D_01CB99F5.D1808850 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit {Hand Waving Wildly} I enjoy playing low. I also enjoy GMing it. I'm sure I'm not the only one. There is a great deal of fun to be had in thinking up mundane solutions to tricky problems. I would point out that every time we have raised EP rewards the most noticeable result is to have characters reaching extreme level faster, and the line between each level rises. What is now low/medium was firmly medium when I 1st started playing. We have a number of players who love playing extreme, and GM's to run games for them. But don't lose sight of the rest of us in your hurry to make the game better for that group. On an aside Helen's point of needing to be familiar with the rules and our groups gaming conventions before playing in the wilder and wackier games is important. It takes a lot of extra explanation time to give newer players an idea of what their abilities can and can't do. <Waves back> Good point Rosemary, FOr me the issue is Bunny rather than Low (this could be semantics, i see Low starting at about 50k ep). I find the requirement to play a bunny to be a disincentive to retiring my high PC and starting a new PC. I know some like to play bunny PCs, and we still can by not using the EP at Character Generation, simply bank it for later. But I take your points about valuing the play styles and preferences of different people. Anyways after the meeting today it seems all sorted to me. I enjoyed the meeting today and am looking forward to running my low game in the Autum with some new people. Thanks Jono and all Warmly Hamish _____________________________________________ From: dq-owner@dq.sf.org.nz [mailto:dq-owner@dq.sf.org.nz] On Behalf Of R Mansfield Sent: Sunday, December 12, 2010 12:12 PM To: dq@dq.sf.org.nz Subject: Re: [dq] Character Gen - Background Experience {Hand Waving Wildly} I enjoy playing low. Is there another way for new players to get involved where they do develop the stuff you are raising here.... Because any experienced guild members is going to be able to find a way around playing low if they don't want to (I started a giant as my second PC to avoid it after playing just one year) and if this is the case then having bunny games is not working. The idea is to run the game for a couple of sessions, then talk about it, and have someone else run the game for a couple of sessions, and so on. We will be playing at Chez Smith on Sundays, starting around 2:30 - 3:00 pm going through to 8:30pm. If you are interested in taking part in this, send me an email off list at jim.arona@gmail.com --0016364270a43c0b0d0497318ee6 Content-Type: text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1 <div>Hi guys.</div> <div>Mike, Keith and I are going to run a kind of DM workshop over the Summer season.
