I=92m with Ian Wood, If we are going to =93fix it=94 let=92s just do so =
by doing
away with the dam thing.

In the interests of tree conservation and saving printer ink here is how =
I
handle the differing SC on a printed character sheet.

Thorn my Master Warrior/Healer has trained in some 30+ different =
weapons.
For 11 of these weapons her Healers tactile empathy penalty may change =
or
may not apply depending on whether the weapon is used in close, melee or =
at
range. My solution was not another column or another line on the =
character
sheet but to work out how the weapon was most likely to be used and
calculate the SC to that usage. Then I note to which of the 2 or 3 uses =
the
SC is calculated to by making the letter visibly different (its bold) on =
the
use column of my Character sheet, so that I know in 5 yrs time which use =
its
calculating the SC based on and how to adjust it if I do something
different... like throw a Battle Axe at someone not multi-hex strike =
them.

E.g. A Dagger is mostly a close weapon for someone who regularly uses a =
hand
& =BD sword even though it can be used at Range in Melee or Close, so my
character sheet has under use RMC. Then come game time I use my sword =
(SC
calc=92d for melee) until I get into close and then swap to the dagger =
and use
the numbers on the sheet. If I somehow end up in a melee Dagger fight or
choose to disarm myself by throwing the thing for some reason then I can
adjust the SC accordingly.

The thing is while a character may have the skill to use many weapons =
they
are creatures of habit, they usually only regularly use 3 or 4 weapons, =
and
they mostly use then the same way,...e.g. Bow for Range, Battle Axe for
melee, Dagger or Unarmed for close, so they only need the one set of SC =
for
90% of the time.

Subject[dq] Digital Character Sheets
FromHelen Saggers

I found many years ago that it was just too difficult to adjust all the
numbers on a character sheet manually something always got missed when I did
my ranking and changed a stat. or a skill rank.

So I use a custom made spread sheet to calculate the IV, SC, CC, BC etc. for
my characters, which I update after each ranking.

Even the simplest of my characters has 5 basic pages Weapons, College,
Equipment, the Main page with stats & skills, plus a miscellaneous info/calc
page. I then edit the columns displayed and print a Character Sheet (or in
the case of Thorn two sheets one for her light armour and one for her
heavy).

These Character sheets are also able to be turned into a PDF and Emailed to
the GM if they want, although I tend to give GMs paper copies just in case
I'm sick or whatever.

The Spread sheet was never meant to be changed on the fly... that I don't
have the programming skills for such aside... the number of variables
within the game that change from fight to fight, scenario to scenario mean
that I would spend half the night checking or unchecking boxes and inputting
numbers. At that point I'm with Jim, we may as well be playing an actual
computer game, and that's not the point of DQ.

At game time I have clip board with scrap paper and I take/make notes, often
in those few minutes when the tac map comes out and the GM is busy with the
marker pens I have the time to look up IV, SC. Def, MR, etc on my character
sheet, and recalc them on paper based on the current active buffs or
penalties. I keep the running total of EN and FT; note damage required to
stun and the numbers for recovery. Basically whatever I think I might need
all in one place so I'm not flicking though pages of character folder for a
number.

Keeping Character sheets on a lap top or I pad would see one scrolling
though pages not only to tick boxes and input numbers but also to find the
various numbers as needed. And what if you have power /battery issues during
game.

By keeping it all on paper the worst that can happen is I lose my pen or
break my pencil and I carry spares.

While everyone has their own way or style of record keeping as Jim has said
there are those out there who manage to not know what their numbers are...
even from one pulse to the next.

It's my hope that by sharing what's worked for me for well over a decade
others will pick up a tip or two that will help games run more smoothly.

Helen

Digital Character Sheets

As for implying that PCs with laptops have more accurate character
sheets...Well. We both know players with digital character sheets and who
STILL manage not to know what their numbers are.

They are an impediment to play. Some people, for goodness sake, play games
on them. Not a problem in the privacy of your own home, but you wouldn't do
it when entertaining people or something. I find it mortally offensive when
pcs do it during my game and award Experience to reflect this.
