Subject[dq] Games for new players from BattleCry
FromStephen Martin
DateFri, 15 Feb 2013 15:48:24 +1300
A flier is going out with the BattleCry info packs announcing that we're welcoming new players.

In order to be as welcoming as we've promised, we need a couple of GMs to be ready to run low
level fun intro-to-dq games.
We probably won't know how many we'll need until we see who turns up at the guild meeting but
if a few of us have something in mind then we can maintain the illusion of planning and
forethought as we spontaneously assign the newbies to games.

The plan is that we start new players with 'level 3' characters (equivalent to 2 or 3
adventures worth of ranking) instead of the DQ usual 'level 0' so they can have a positive
base chance at one or two things when they start.

Thanks, Stephen.

Subject[dq] Experience Awards
FromStephen Martin
DateFri, 15 Feb 2013 16:11:06 +1300
It has been observed that there is some variation in how and how much experience is awarded by
different GMs.

The current experience awards are 0-1500 per night for preparation, contribution and
roleplaying, and another 0-1500 per night based on the level of the adventure.

On this basis, assuming you are prepared and attend every night, an 11 night adventure should
see you walk away with 11,000 - 15,000 (depending on GM opinion) plus (0 / 3300 / 6600 / 9900
/ etc.) for level.

I've heard comment from GMs using this that they feel stingy for not giving out enough xp.

http://www.dragonquest.org.nz/dqwiki/index.php/Experience

I would appreciate GM and player opinions:

Is the amount of xp from the current system fine / too much / too little?

Is the structure of the xp awards fine / too simple / too complicated?

Should we be concerned about consistency between GMs or is that overly bureaucratic?

How and why would you change the xp awards?

Thanks, Stephen.

I think some GMs give less xp but more loot. Without massively balancing
everything it'd be a bit silly to balance just one part of it and then have
massive disparity because all get the same XP but some get far more loot.

Given that XP is earnt at a linear rate, whereas it is spent at a quadratic
rate, I think you could double experience awards and not see too much
variation.
It will have the largest impact on low level characters and may not even be
noticed by high level ones.

I would be happy to see a doubling in the Exp earned by characters.

I would be happy to see new areas highlighting social areas like;

   - Leading a party with the focus being on player enjoyment.
   - Acting as a Guild Scribe keeping the scribe notes up to date on the
   wiki.
   - Moving the story/adventure along.
   - Directly helping other players (Healthy snacks, Car rides home,
printing a Players Guide or two).
   - Adding to the fun of the game and/or the enjoyment of other players
(low cut tops, tight bulge revealing trousers, cheap bottles of wine,
   smelling nice :-)

You are a bad man!

I don't know what 'doubling' or increasing by an order of magnitude, would
achieve when I don't know what game experience is desired.

Some people have said they like the slow development of PCs.

Some prefer to get up to Medium in less than a year.

Some don't like have incompetent PCs, they want to have a good chance of
casting, or hitting things.

Some have said that game design has changed in 30 years, that DQ needs to
evolve.

Other that they will fight tooth and nail any changes.

It will be difficult to define what is wanted of EP before we understand
what is wanted of the game.

BTW - you are a bad man Jono.

Cheers Ian

Subject: Re: [dq] Experience Awards

I would be happy to see a doubling in the Exp earned by characters.

I would be happy to see new areas highlighting social areas like;

*	Leading a party with the focus being on player enjoyment.
*	Acting as a Guild Scribe keeping the scribe notes up to date on the
wiki.
*	Moving the story/adventure along.
*	Directly helping other players (Healthy snacks, Car rides home,
printing a Players Guide or two).
*	Adding to the fun of the game and/or the enjoyment of other players
(low cut tops, tight bulge revealing trousers, cheap bottles of wine,
smelling nice :-)

Kind regards,

Jonathan Bean
